So far it's been just my Samsung S5 so I have communication, offline GPS, and camera all in one device. Next time I'll have a separate camera with so I can do better video and burst shots, exposure control, etc.

    Whoever was asking about pillows..

A felt cinch sack with your choice of clothing inside (firm and dense, soft and fluffy, etc,.) works great and adds only a couple ounces, less than an inflatable pillow, and a far cry more comfortable - and usually for the cost of free.

My camera body is 2 pounds alone. The lenses I like to bring are 1.5 and 1.25 lbs, respectively. The mini tripod and ballhead I have weighs 1.7 lbs. That is 6.5 pounds in camera gear alone! :militarypress:

I also use an iPhone (7+ now) for GPS with Gaia and additional picture capability.

I've made the executive decision to never take my DSLR out on backpacking trips. Not only the weight, but I'd be so worried about protecting it. And keeping it handy, it would be swinging all over the place. Unfortunately I have to compromise maximum picture quality though.

There are also dry bags that have a felt panel on the inside of one of the sides. Use it as your clothes bag, then for a pillow just invert it and put your clothes back in so you have a soft felt or fleece pillow side. If you don't carry enough clothes to make a full pillow, trap a little extra air inside and you're good to go. If your dry bag deflates slowly, get one of those micro inflatable pillows and put it inside with your clothes and it will hold its shape. Those small inflatable pillows are light and compact, but I like a slightly larger pillow. This is where the dry bag with clothes fills the gap.

I like soft felt on my beak more than nylon.

    Feels more pillowy.

I use the felt bags as a stuff sack during the day, so es bueno.

Having just invested in a full frame, it will not go on backpack trips. However, I'm delving into night sky/astrophotography. It will have to be hiked in to some locations. But only those that are specifically for shooting the sky...

Now that's a damn good reason to bring an SLR out into the field. You get all of that control of exposure and aperture needed for those amazing night shots.

First, I'm sorry. The astrophotography addiction will soon consume your finances. If you get into taking pictures through a telescope it gets $$$$$ but you get epic shots. :D

I got into AP in a big way but sold my rig when I got into school. If you do go that route shoot me a PM and I can walk you through the general process/equipment/etc.

I am looking at possibly getting a 6D, but coming from a 7D it seems like I will be disappointed in the usability/controls/etc. I know the sensor is damn near identical (MP aside) to the 5Diii, though. The interface and button layout of the 7D is extremely similar to a 5D, so it makes me want to just hold out for a 5Diii when the time comes. The WiFi and GPS features of the 6D are extremely tempting, however, not to mention that it's $1k cheaper.

I was also planning on selling the 7D to fund the purchase, but after shooting an Air Show and Top Fuel Drag event this weekend, the 7D made taking 2,700 pictures easily!
