Damn, Should have never read this. never paid attention because I highways around me are 70 mph w/o traffic or 10mph with traffic, and only drive it on highway to get to a trail. Tonight I'm drivin through MD with 55mph posted. I start listening for this, and sure enough, at 60mph to 65 mph, feathering the throttle makes this sound. Now, it's an annoyance i didn't notice before. TRDOR DCSB

You are trying to get warranty work from Toyota who probably doesn't want you to change the diff fluid when you are reporting diff issues

Exactly I almost changed mine to solve the howl and my service writer said that would have been a bad idea. Who's to say they would know but not worth risking.

As long as you change it with the correct viscosity differential fluid, the dealer can say whatever they want but you won't void your warranty. That would be like your dealer declining you service because you used Mobile 1 0w-20 instead of the OEM Toyota stuff. It wouldn't happen. Lifting your truck, regearing, etc. sure. Warranty is voided all day long. Nothing bad will happen if you change your differential oil with the appropriate fluid and fill it to the right level.

Agree, and never had an issue outside of my toyotacare since I do my own work, but you never know. Agree with other part you stated which is Why I'm hesitating after my diff replacement to lift.

    That's probably smart.

I read this forum a lot more than I post. I can really appreciate the time, money, and effort that so many people put into modifying their trucks to be exactly what they want. I've seen a lot of good looking modified trucks on here. Whenever I see one though, I always have the same thought. I'm damn lucky that I have always preferred my Toyota trucks to be stock. I've honestly never been tempted to lift one of my trucks, swap out the wheels, tune it for more power, etc. It's not really even about the warranty. I just really like stock trucks. I can't explain it but every day I'm happy that the mod bug hasn't bitten me. I'd like to say that I put all that money I would have otherwise spent into something smart, but I probably spent it on one of my other hobbies.

Yep, my last 2 tacomas were lifted, even though they were never really problems, there are nuances that result from lifting, wear and tear on parts, squeaks and groans, decreased mpg and yes the chance later down the road you'll have to fight the service writer about your lift not causing it. Now that I have a complimentary platinum warranty from toyota for my diff issue it helps fight the lift temptation. And like you said when I get the temptation I just remember that the money could be better spent elsewhere. Cheers.

Whelp, here's the invoice for my trip to the dealer today. It's going to muddy the waters for some, but here it is anywho:

    IMG_0672.jpgIMG_0672.jpg

When the service advisor told me it was the T-case, I was at a loss for words. I asked if I could quickly talk to the tech, and they obliged. I saw that they had my rig up on a hoist with the exhaust hose attached, so I kinda knew what they were doing. The tech said the whine was unmistakable while under the truck, and that the diff was quiet as a church. Output shaft bearing in the T-case... huh

I gotta tell ya, I spoke with the tech and his explanation made perfect sense based on how they tracked down the noise. It may be that MY truck is whining for a different reason than the next guy's. Weird though, that my symptoms are identical to several others on TW (even the audio recordings sound the same).
Perhaps this could explain why some other trucks began whining immediately after a 3rd member swap, but I digress.

    Yup :canada:

I gotta say, the service was prompt and professional. The whole thing, from ride along to diagnosis to outa there was about an hour. And I only called to set it up this morning.

    where abouts?
If mine starts I want to know where to bring it. All the dealers I've gone to before buying mine told me they haven't heard anything about any issues for the 3rd gen. Only dealer that did finally admit they knew was the dealer I got mine from more out of the city sort of in the country. They knew of a howling issue but have not seen any, they did tell me they were fully aware of the low trans fluid though and already agreed when my delivery comes in that they will check it and top it off if it's low, and issue me all paper work about it.

Sorry man, I'm in Halifax.. That's a hellava drive for you!

Funny, after thinking about the whole experience at the dealership today, the only thing that was suspect to me was when the tech said I was the first one with this symptom that he's heard of.

Maybe the company line, who knows.

Well like I said, you're the second reported Canadian model I can think of on this site.
So could also just be its not a common thing. Plus these trucks don't sell as fast as they do down in the states it seems. Or at least not here in the city (and probably not in Halifax) I'm in toronto, all the local dealers I talked to here even admitted they'll maybe sell 10 tacomas a year lol.
The dealer I bought from said they sell about 40 a year and I was more out in the country where I bought it. They had a lot of tundras on the lot so maybe they sell more of them.
But if you consider the amount sold around the city, makes sense the dealer never hears about it.

But hopefully yours gets taken care of, and it is just the transfer case and after the one fix it doesn't come back
