Don't deviate from the T-IV fluid although Amsoil claims it's compatible.

Well I'm confussed. I went to the Toyota dealership and I argued with the person behind the counter. He brought out Dexon III and said thats it. I said no I need Type IV. He got the book out and it shows for 2001 and 2002 to use Dexron. I did look at 2004 and it shows IV. I pulled up an old post where the someone said if you have a 5VZ to use IV and thats what I have. The dealership told me he didn't carry iv. What do you do??? Rick

Bumping threads. So I'm gonna change my trans fluid. I called Kragen/O'Riely to see if they had the T-4 fluid, they said they have a MAG equivalent: yay or nay?

Any major auto parts stores carry the t4 fluid?

So I've seen people suggest ATF T-IV for transmission fluid. I checked my manual to find out how many quarts I needed - couldn't find out (01' Tacoma Auto, 4cycl, 2.7).

The manual suggests using DEXRON II or III?

After some research on it.....turns out for the 01&02 tacoma........dex 3 is recommended. I think the t4 is pretty interchangeable tho......have used it in several trucks.....one being an 02 without any probs. Stick to the dex3 tho if you'd like......cheaper and more available than the t4.

My Tranny drain plug have DII stamped on it. I was very confused by this too because I have read all over the internet to run IV, but my truck calls for DII or DIII lol

    I choose DII

My manual calls for DIII. I just switch it out often if i am offroading to try and prolong my tranny. I thought T4 was only for second gens? interesting...

I researched this to no end a while back, I found that my 02 taco required dex III, I bought it from the dealer for 3.99qt. I believe 04 and 03 have different requirements if i remember correctly.

I did not drop the pan, just drain and fill, then drove about 500 miles then did another drain and fill.
