Crap. Sorry, I clearly missed that sentence. I watched several outdoor websites for many months before I pulled the trigger. Mats can get stupid expensive, so I was waiting for a closeout deal. I'm currently using a Thermarest Prolite 3. When the ground is exceptionally hard, I inflate as much as possible.

I saw where they had one that was 3" thick inflated and was thinking that may be enough but they also have a 4" one which may be overkill.

Size and weight would be my concern over something that size. Now, a super budget trick is to purchase a cheapo pool raft from Walmart and use that. I've seen it done with decent success.

I don't know what I need because I've never slept on one before. The stores here don't have a display with them out where you are able to test them. REI is about 2 hours away but I don't know if they have them out or not either.

REI will have them out. They also carry a decent selection of different types of mats. It may be worth the drive if you are really certain that you want a pad. Or you could just use the pool float. Just be sure to inflate the float and leave it inflated for a day or two to see how hell it holds air.

    Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite Sleeping Pad

Pricey, but highly reviewed by the ultralight guys for true comfort. With a 3.2 R value, it's about as good as it gets for the weight. That's my next purchase to replace my thinner and lower R-value but much cheaper Klymit Static V.

Unfortunately none close by worth a damn. Maybe I should just go over to Gander Mtn and start opening and inflating them. See what happens. Not like there's ever an employee in the camping section anyway. Lol

Which direction in Georgia? Mountain crossings up north is fantastic. Alabama Outdoors in Huntsville, Birmingham and a few other sites. Mountain High has a few locations too.

    Gander is for redneck camping.

HA!!!!! Pretty useless these days. I was in one just this past weekend and was very unimpressed with the camping section.
