I run a detroit in my stock 8.4 and my 14b has a grizzly in it. No issues on the road and I never really hear it. If you get throttle happy you get a chirp at times

It's not bad. As with any full time locker, you need to be aware of torque steer on the highway. That being said though, my rig is still street legal but doesn't make extended trips down the road any more. It is fun to watch the reactions of the neighborhood people when I chirp the 40s around corners though.

I had detroits fron and rear when I was on toy axles. Never any problems with highway driving besides the lack of power from the 22re. Lol.

I am totally fine with auto lockers (detroit, grizzly, lock right, etc) in the rear axle. They are a bit more temperamental with a manual tranny, but not a big deal once you learn how they operate.

However, though i've run auto lockers in the front axle, I think overall selectable locker is a bit better for the front axle if you can afford it. Having said that i ran a lock rights front/rear for years when I had IFS and managed locker behaviors quite well.

Selectable front/rear is sweet but that cost $$$$$

I will go selectable rear before front on a off-road only solid axle rig. Especially with limited turning angle on Yota axles.

Get less push with the rear unlocked and let the fronts pull into the turn.

That's why I went with 1tons :D Plus my rig is dual purpose. Steering range with yota axles is not the best.

When I had IFS i ran a lock right for years in the front and kept the rear axle open for the reasons you mentioned.

But now with the bigger axles and better turning radius having auto locker in the rear axle is not an issue.

This is honestly the most annoying part when driving on the street. The little tail wag you get on the highway when you let off the gas is a little weird at first. My truck SUCKS in the rain with the auto locker, however im sure the swampers play a part in that. If its just a toy and not a dd, auto lock it front and rear and spend the money you saved on meat to grill and beer to drink around the camp fire.

I bet you've spent more than enough money in beer that you could have afforded selectable lockers :D

I learned the hard way that With a manual tranny it is absolutely important to maintain the same tire pressure on the rear tires. Just a few pounds off in one of the tires and when you depress the clutch the truck pulls to one side rather abruptly.

With the front I didn't care cause I had manual hubs that i only locked off road.

I don't have a tow rig so this thing will be driven to and from the trails, no of which are even remotely close. So I've planned on doing ARBs front and rear.

Just gonna take a while to get the money together on top of everything else.

Craigslist score. Found a full cutting rig 2hrs away for $200. Went and picked it up tuesday after work. Made for a long day but sure as hell made life easier this weekend

    IMG_20161015_190415611.jpg

Front axle is out and cleaned, so are the shock hoops and brace. I probably spent 8-10 hrs this weekend just grinding. Without the torch I woulda beed screwed, so I'll call it a success.

I wanted to do air lockers fron/rear. But i just couldn't budget another $2,000 just for that. So I settled for just an air locker in the front.

If I had a trail rig only i would have probably done spools front/rear :D

Nice score! Torch definitely makes life easier

Im in the same boat you are trailerless, auto lockers are still fine on the street for that.

Agreed. Been DD'ing mine for 4 years on a Detroit rear. I love it.

I ordered 5.38 gears for the rear and didn't get an option for thin or thick. then when i ordered the RD114 it didn't give an option there either. so i guess it's thick only.

I drive mine around town but it's mostly off road and i still spent the cash on ARB's. Facts are (since the new two piece design) I believe they are just as strong if not stronger than a spool when locked in and when unlocked save stress on your drive train esp. off road.

Nah, nothing is as strong as a spool. Solid peice.

Aside from strength, don't forget all the issues that can occur with an ARB. Hose busted, leaking o-ring, compressor shit out via electrical, or mechanical. A switch stops working, etc. Meh

Soon After I got a zip locker installed in my front D60 I learned about the competition version of it. It was too late then, as i didn't want to pay for labor twice. Can't remember what the price difference was between the two.

I think it is a great option. You have no worries about equipment failure leaving you with an open differential. Some teams are using it in Ultra 4 racing.

If I had a trail only rig I would probably consider spools front/rear.

Air lockers are reliable when properly installed. But there's people that always seem to have issues with them.

No kiddin' haha. The ARB is the holy cow of the wheeling community.

i hear you on the possible failures of an ARB but ive installed 5 of them in my own rigs and never had an issue just be smart about where you run you lines and over kill with the air and electrical.
