Supposedly, and this is just what Ive read and have no idea about the facts, is once toyota went through the law suit with the frame supplier that they changed supplier and fixed the frame flaw. The frame problem was almost always at specific areas of the frame, not the entire frame. One was by the catalytic converters and somewhere in the rear I believe. Hopefully they did change it. Time will tell though.

I'm not one bit worried about my 15'. Are some of you guys not aware the Tacoma is mostly a C-channel frame? Only the front 1/3rd of the frame is boxed. Anyways,I use a wax coating and concentrate on the braced areas first, then the inside of the c-channel.

I just crawled under my 2015 truck for its pre-winter treatment with Rust-Cure (BTW this stuff from Canada is great - been using it since I got my truck - it goes on a bit thicker than fluid film).
Frame is still clean. Last spring there was some minor surface rust on a couple of welds which were sanded down and rattle canned with Rustoleum.
I live on Long Island NY and drive on the beach pretty much year round. I hose down the underside pretty regularly.
As a side note, the only other rust I've found were on bolts that I missed coating and on my door sills where the plastic cover rubbed through the paint.

I think it really comes down to maintenance. I'd wager a well kept frame would last 100+ years. Fresh water and fluid film should be any Toyota drivers best friend.

Nope. It's weird how some frames didn't rust. A co-worker bought an 07' TRD new. Sold it to a fellow co-worker last year as he purchased a 16' Sport. His frame was in excellent shape with nothing but simple maintainence. No special treatments just hosed off the undercarriage in the winter.

With a quality frame you'll get awhile out of it, but these Toyota frames where I live no matter what you do they turn to Swiss cheese after 10 years. I know people that bought Tacoma's new and krown rust proofed ever year and their 1st gen Tacoma's still had frames that fell apart.

If you experienced a north east Canadian winter you'd believe me. -40 one day, +10 the next. Tons of salt/salt brine on the roads, surrounded by salt water ocean.

2012 here. Frame is cherry, but I live away from the ocean salt and I don't have any winter salt to deal with.

Theres a flaw in some of the frames. Not all frames may have been affected by it.

What I was getting at with your statement is, this frame is the same design as the frames that were rusting through. The flaw of the frame will rot regardless of box or c channel, or rust treatments. Now, the newer tacoma frames may have been fixed of this flaw. Time will tell in the salt states.

Like I said about mine, it still looks pretty decent. Ive looked at the areas that have always rotted on the older frames and I dont see any rust in those areas. If it does rot out, I guess ill have a new frame in about 10 years. lol

Currently my frame looks to be in excellent shape. Others seem to be saying that also. I realize that it's only been thru 4 NE winters but if it was gonna start, I would think there would be more signs evident of rust. Does anyone know if Toyota has been inspecting any of the later ones to check if they are holding up sufficiently?

On top of that people with rust issues were pointing out the "C-channel" frame being a sandwiched design is a problem, given hidden rust can begin in between the layers (like at the cat converters, etc) and then cause rust from inside-out. So I'm guessing even if Toyota did right by newer frames (which I wouldn't be surprised if we continue the status quo), people up north with some really salty brined roads would probably fare better by rinsing out in between the layers if at all possible. And adding to that, fluid filming between layers where you find the gaps to shoot some in. I can imagine salt/salt water just sitting in their and eating it up.

People with 2010+ have made comments about rust. This issue is sifting between bullshit whining cause someone never rinsed their frame after a salty winter, versus truthful claims. Some people's complaints look like the stem from pure neglect of their vehicle. That, or you get some people freaking the hell out over miniscule surface rust, like on the frame welds or whatever. I only pay attention to people who claim they took good care of a frame and yet it still rusted for some reason.

I live in the south so it isn't that big a deal for my own Tacoma, but if I was to ever go somewhere else it is still good to know.
