Non jbl sound system

'Hope you had better luck with this $1500 OEM sound system than my son did. Here's a post I just made in another thread:


My son is having electrical problems with his 2016 since installation of this same OEM system specifically designed for the 2016 Tacoma. The rear speakers were very soft when first installed, unless it was equalized to put all the power to the rear. So OEM sent him a new amp and it was reinstalled. It solved the rear power problem but now he's going back and forth between Toyota and the aftermarket stereo installer as to what is causing the inside lights to blow out. The first time it happened was after the OEM system was installed with the old amp. Now it is still blowing the inside light fuse instantly, and Toyota insists the fuse is blowing because there is an open circuit somewhere from the aftermarket wiring of the stereo. They won't do any warranty work on the electrical unless all that wiring is removed. The installer says all the wiring is done correctly. In the meantime the system keeps blowing fuse after fuse even when the radio/stereo power is disconnected at the battery. Anyone else have lighting fuses blowing after changing the factory stereo? He is about to have the whole thing pulled out and sent back to OEM and all the original factory junk put back in the truck. I feel awful because it was my fault he changed the system in the first place. We bought the OEM for a birthday gift after reading about it here on the forum. Any advice on 2016 electrical issues would be greatly appreciated.

 

This definitely sounds related to the installation. Did the installer check the ground?

From what I've read on the forums the company that makes this system is ALL about customer support. Has your son been in contact with the Manufacturer?

The installer insists the wiring is done right. I have no idea if they specifically checked the ground when my son took the truck back for them to look at the original install, but Toyota's "diagnostic" report says there is an open circuit somewhere. The auto dealership is blaming the stereo install. Yes, my son has talked to OEM by phone and they sent him a new amp, mostly due to the complaints of the back speakers not sounding good unless the equalizer was turned up to the max. I don't know if they thought a new amp would resolve the blowing light fuse problem, but a new amp hasn't helped. The fuse for the radio and door lights blew again, as soon as he drove away from the install shop. This is a very well known and highly rated audio shop in San Diego, we are talking about. They are brushing him off now the same way the Toyota dealer is giving him the run around. OEM is the only one offering to make good by taking back the whole new aftermarket system, if he can't get the problem fixed.

 

The non jbl sound is ok for a factory radio after you adjust the eq. That said it does lack power. If your used to having a high quality system you won't be happy. IMO I'll keep the HU and add a dsp, amp,sub, and good speakers!

JBL is a waste to me.
JBL are decent products but for the price they offer it at (mind you its only offered on the limited here in ) just not worth it. I can build a better system for the same price.

Besides as much as I love having a sub, likely wont have one in the taco. Just don't want to lose any cargo space inside the cab. I already have plans for what to store where the sub goes for the OEM plus thing.
Might see about just redoing all the speakers.

Probably going to transfer my JL Clean sweap over from my jetta to the taco and then get a new amp and some speakers.

 

What is the other thread you posted in about this? I'm very curious as I was interested in this setup.

For the money they want for the JBL upgrade you can put together a system that is alot better.

 

Two 10 " JL audio tw-3. Hits so hard about to go into my 2017 took outta my 2015

 

As often as this question comes up, it'd be a huge help for folks if you (and/or anyone else knowledgeable of such things) would list the speakers, amp, and sub components that you recommend as being superior to the factory JBL setup. Probably also be worthwhile to say what "better" means to you.

I suspect many people simply don't know where to begin in figuring out what components to consider.

Crutchfield's ok, but I don't trust their expertise on matters. I bought a refurbished JBL L16 and it wouldn't connect to my I phone over airplay. They sent me another one, had the same problems, then they sent me a brand new one after I twisted their arm about it, but it didn't work either. after who knows how many hours of phone support, plugging things in, resetting every electronic device in my house, it ended up being a software update from JBL that fixed the damn thing. I guess that's not really their fault, but if we could have gotten to that conclusion a little sooner, I wouldn't have been so butt hurt.

 

I think some people in here dont realise there are more than one non-JBL systems. At least for the '16s. Some things have changed for '17. I have the premium. I'm somewhat of an audiophile, always did systems in my vehicles growing up and I have about 6k just in speakers and amps in my living room setup. I think the premium is ok. I could continue to live with it. It's not so bad that I'm constantly reminded that I dont like it. I havn't heard the bottom tier, but would suspect that it is pretty inexpensive and it shows. The JBL is probably pretty decent, as long as its pretty flat and they didnt try to appeal to the beats crowd.

 

Have the non JBL system in my 2016 TRD OR and I love it! Sounds amazing to me...plan to do nothing to it unless speakers or head unit go out on me. JBL Premium was not something that was worth the upgraded cost to me.

 

Any thoughts on the best EQ settings for the non jbl entune premium system? I mostly listen to country and some hip-hop

Yeah...I listen to the exact same style of music. My girlfriend and I seen to really like the treble set about +3 over neutral. Mids +2 over neutral and bass +3 over neutral. I also moved the center of the speakers focus to plus 1 or 2 towards the front seats since I never sit in the rear I am always driving.

Bass is nice a full. Trebles will really cut through. This works for my ears...but you can play around with it from there to match your tastes.

All else fails I would recommend just upgrading the speakers....that will also much improve the factory system in cars if you need that extra boost.
