No assumptions. Just read the multiple problem threads in the 3rd gen section and come to your own conclusion.

Guys, cmon....3rd Gen vs 2nd Gen aside, this makes 0 sense financially. His truck is barely broken in by Tacoma standards. Drive it for 2-3 more years, then upgrade to a 3rd Gen. By that time you will have more money saved and some of the 3rd Gen "issues" should be worked out by then.

    Get whatchu want.

Plenty of buyers looking for late model 2nd gen trucks that don't like the new truck, if that's the route you want to go. Your mileage isn't low, but it isn't high either. Should be an easy sale for either you or the dealer you trade in at.

It took me a while to get use to the manual trans, with not much torque, you've really gotta keep the revs up to get the thing moving, even stock!!

LMAO, if this were true the would be giving the trucks away.

Again look at those posting about their problems. Many folks join to bitch, not many join to talk about how good things are, because they are to busy having fun in their new truck

Alright, I'll say it for him.

Keep the 2013 unless you want to deal with all of the stupid issues this truck has. Mine has been in the shop longer than my last 4 vehicles combined--and thats in less than a year.

Paid to get my 2013 TRD OR DC w/ 60k professionally detailed and bam it was a like new truck to me.
The detailing saved me thousands of a new truck payment.
Nothing against the 3GEN just don't like payments or giving large amounts of my money away.

Sorry to hear about your issues. At least you own a 3rd gen and can provide first hand experience as opposed to some knucklehead who read something about a 3rd gen, blah... blah... knows someone who has a 3rd gen, blah... blah... saw a 3rd gen in the shop, blah... blah..

True, but 50% have the diff howl. I wouldn't be surprised if the prevalence is even higher than that for the transmission issues.

Devil's advocate, I'm sure anyone can say this about any vehicle with a popular forum. It was the same when I owned a GTI...don't get the Mk6 stick with a Mk5, don't get a Mk7 stick with a Mk6. It goes on and on. All vehicles have their issues, some more severe than others, but I wouldn't recommend that someone not buy a vehicle just because of issues reported on a forum designed so that people can talk about issues they have.

I'm not saying don't research, but take things with a grain of salt.

I had a 2013 Double Cab 4x2 5' Texas Edition with 40k miles, just traded it in on a 2017 TRD Sport Double Cable 4x2 5' with the premium+tech package and some other goodies. Payment went up a bit, insurance came down, and I get better gas mileage. All in all I spend about $50 extra a month to drive a brand new, tech filled truck with a 5 year Toyotacare plan. Other than not being used to the shift points in the trans yet (6 gears might have been unnecessary guys) I'm very, very, very glad I made the trade and would do it again.

The differential does seem to be an issue with lots, if I was to bet, I would bet that if the trans fluid had been filled those tranny problems would be way less. Now that they have the program better, I sense we will hear about it less as well.

Are these reasons to not by the truck? I don't think so, get a manual and the 50/50 shot on the differential I guess

My truck may be new but I have not experienced any of the issues you talk about in my 2017 TRD Pro. I have just turned over 1000 miles and have not had a chance to take it off road or use the 4wd yet though. I do like the creature comforts of modern "normal" cars though, heated seats, leather, electronics package... To be honest it has less comforts than my 2006 BMW but then again, its a truck (and hopefully will not break down as much). I will say the touch screen in it is very snappy, better than my 2015 Honda Accord Touring . To me that is a good thing. Think about it, it does less than an IPad, yet usually in the vehicles its significantly slower and at a cost much higher than a PC or tablet. This is not the case in my Tacoma, I am impressed with it. I will say the transmission seems to be hunting for the right gear a lot, and when you have to give it that little extra to gain that 3mph difference it will downshift and hold that gear, imo, too long. It sometimes makes me want to put it in autostick mode to force it to 6th. As soon as you put it in autostick, it drops to 4th then you tap twice to get it to 6th then the rmps drop and you can put it back in drive. I have to deal with too much traffic on a daily basis to deal with a manual, done that before, not going to do it again (for all the auto haters). With all that said, I am still happy with it, it is comfy, quiet (compared to my friends 2005 Tacoma) and I am happy with the truck. I know the price is high but I did not want a full size, I have to park this thing and want it to be nimble, I am happy with my choice. I bought this to replace my 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7l Hemi 2wd (Just wanted 4wd, and a bed), now the wife wants to keep both... I am now broke.

    To answer your question....

I've driven a 2012 some and have a 2016. I way prefer the 2016. It's a nicer truck. The engine has plenty of power, but you are going to have to just accept that this engine makes power higher in the RPM band and the transmission will run more RPMs than you are used to. It will try to shift into the highest gear, but it won't stay there going up hills. It will shift more than you are used to. Mine will be in cruise and downshifts when going up an incline.... sometimes people mistake it like I'm trying to keep them from passing on the left. It is a characteristic of the truck. If you need power, punch it and it will start moving. This engine is a bunch smoother than the 4.0L at rpms. This engine likes to spin.

I really think the fluid level issue is blown way out of proportion.

I didn't even wanna respond to this...but have you guys even been in the 3rd gen section lol...seriously. it's nothing but whining. How can you tell him it's mostly all guys that don't own 3rd gens. Right now from what I've seen some guys have zero problems and some have them all...your move.
