I have the DCLB 2WD TRD Sport...... When I began shopping for a Tacoma I wanted the DCLB 2WD V6 ........ there were only 2 Tacomas on the lot, The one I bought and an extra cab short box 4x4, and the salesman at the dealership says the DCLB 2WD are rare and hard to find. Has anyone heard any truth to that?

In SoCal dealers basically only have 2wd.
I think it's based off region.

Also extra cab has the same bed as the long bed.

Almost every Tacoma I'd see around town in SoCal (1st or 2nd gen) was a Prerunner, but lately it seems like half the 3rd gens I see are 4x4. I was getting my truck serviced at Toyota in Pasadena the other day and almost every 3rd gen on the lot was 4x4. It was surreal, I've never seen so many in one place (other than a TW meet) out here.

Honestly, I think Tacomaworld has a lot to do with it...if you google anything about Tacomas these days, this forum is what pops up for most of the hits and so many threads are about 4wd and offroading. I think it's really starting to influence people.

Don't you think long beds are maybe not that common everywhere. What does California have to do with it ? Again it's what people want/need. Not everyone needs a Wyoming Limousine. I think it's safe to say one of the most popular configurations is the double cab with a short bed, and the Access Cab which only comes with a long bed and they're all over the place. Maybe I'm being too technical because some only make the "long bed" reference/distinction when it comes to the "option" available for the double cabs.

Nope, if you think half the Tacoma owners are going off roading you are crazy; maybe a 25 percent on here do and even less in the real world. It is image and perception being a large part of it, they are starting to associate 4wd = alpha status in suburbia. They also look at forums when searching and see all the idiotic comments like "I would never own a 2wd truck" or "why would you buy a 2wd truck" or the best one is "better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it" ect that people snub their noses at 2wd owners even though many of the 4wd owners are a joke and poseurs themselves.

I have noticed that here in Texas with all the box checker versions (Platinum, King Ranch, Laramie, High Country ect) most are 4wd or FX4 off road packages.

BTW, double cab long bed for the win. Dads Canyon has that that is useful as all heck, even a few inches longer than my short bed silverado; my mountain bike fits better in there with the tonneau cover closed.

Because that's exactly what I said  If you're looking for a reason to go off on people for buying a 4wd truck when they really don't need one, you don't need to twist my words to do it. Just say it. I said I think it has something to do with why people are buying them and yes, I agree that it's dumb to buy a 4x4 as some kind of status symbol. But that doesn't change the fact that there are way more 4x4 Tacomas around here than there used to be, seeing them for sale on the Toyota lot was uncommon in LA but that's not the case in this area anymore.

Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean it isn't happening. Sure, most people in places like Southern California have no need for a 4wd vehicle like someone in a cold climate state would but we don't get to tell people how to spend their money.
