Thanks for the input. Guess I'll have to figure out how many times I'll use it and go from there. This is helpful.

Keep elevation and average temps in mind too. Both will affect fuel consumption

Good point. Probably better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

So if I keep bringing the amount I bring I'll be good, right?

fuels burn at different temps at different efficiencies. Higher elevations and lower temps will make them less efficient.
Canisters - like a jet boil where the short, squatty canister has the upright valve and screw on burner- are probably the worst for cold weather as they rely on the gas maintaining pressure and vaporizing inside the canister. You'll only be able to use say 75% of the fuel in cold weather. After that there is too much dead space in the canister for the fuel to vaporize properly. So you think you need x oz. And x canisters you need to factor in the 25% loss.
Canisters that rest in their side or multi fuel systems - like a MSR whisperlite (what I have) - are better for cold weather as they rely on a little hand pump to keep the canister pressurized for optimum consumption. And when it burns down you can angle canister to keep more near the valve and burn nearly all of the fuel contained within.

flat land, mild weather. Yeah, youre good

If it is sub-freezing I will keep a second canister in my pocket (to keep it warm) and swap it out when the first one gets cold.

Or you can put the canister/stove in a shallow pan of warm water too - works great but is a little bit of a pain in the butt.

Or use those shake'n'bake hand warmers in the little rounded alcove under the canister.

I fell behind a few pages while at work but thanks for the firearm question replies. Diverse answers is always a good thing. Id rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it. But i was interested in other views on the topic.

I guess it depends where I'm going. Mostly for predators. Its the same reason i carry with me now. Even going to family parties, its there. I guess because we live in a crazy world and wether it's animals or humans, you just never really know. Its not a security blanket, its just a tool id prefer not to be without. Although the likelihood of using is probably extremely small, its worth a couple extra pounds to me

Other than a grizzly, what animal might you encounter?

Have you ever tried to kill a large animal that was attacking you?

Just FYI, a charging longhorn bull will take 8 rounds to the chest and still keep coming. I know this because 6 of those were my shots. The only reason he stopped was he bled out.

Again, as a solo female backpacker I've never had cause to carry a firearm. Never had an incident where I'd wished I'd had it with me.

I really question the 'need' for carrying with unjustified cause. There's very little documented needs to carry.

I think it's part of the mentality, better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I've run into some shady people out in the desert here. Never escalated into anything but you never know with people.

It's the 2 legged critters that I think about. Don't have to watch for bears or much else around here.

I don't carry but I have ran into meth heads on the back roads before and wish I had something on me.

I would carry up here for moose and that's about it. Those big, dumb, and blind animals get pretty sketchy when you are snow shoeing in the winter and they decide the trails is theirs.

Otherwise we have cats and black bears. Not worried about either but you never know. Its a personal choice though. I won't ever mock or tell another person not to carry.
