Aside from the OP not seeing the light, the first thing a tech should do after an oil change is start the motor and watch to see the light go out. Obviously this crucial step was not done so the fault still lies completely with the dealership.

Not reading 14 pages; but you need to get a lifetime power train warranty out of this.

That is a completely reasonable demand in lieu of the potential damage they have done to your relatively new truck.

I park my truck over the drainage ditch in front of my house, gives me plenty of room to slide under the truck and flip the fumoto valve. Also drives my neighbors a little nuts.

Trying to 'stay classy' is admirable but may cost you a lot down the road. I guarantee you that Toyota will NOT be trying to stay classy...

'Smug bastards' that change their own oil usually do so because they fear the same fate as you when they let some $8.50 an hour teenager half-heartedly change their oil while simultaneously texting his girlfriend etc.

Too many times over the years I came outside in the morning and found a puddle in the driveway due to a loose plug or filter that some bozo screwed up. That said, I'm not a piston head by any means, but I can change my oil faster, cheaper and more efficiently than anyone else.

Sorry to be blunt here, but is there a reason why everyone thinks the OP is just taking it up the rear on this one? He is working with Toyota to see if they can calmly come to an agreement. Im sure talking can either smoothly get the situation to where it needs on a professional level, or elevate it when things don't seem to be going any where. Im surprised that some of you guys are bashing the OP for how he is handling the situation, he said he could go the route of the lawyer if things get bad...why not show all your cards unless you need to?

A lesson learned from this unfortunately is IF you don't change your oil, you may need to do some fluid level checks before leaving the dealership. Im not going to lie, my rents hooked me up with a oil change package for my truck when I got it because they thought it would save me time not doing my own oil. Since Toyota has seemed to execute this task without much issue, I could see me being at fault that I have left my guard down like the OP has and could of driven on an empty engine without checking it first from the dealership. Once my oil change package thing ends, I will go right back to changing my oil. Doesnt make me any less of a man, but if the service was paid for then I will use it. With that being said though, I havnt ever left the dealership with a oil indicator on before as all lights were off.

The should of could of would of crap goes through everyone's minds when something like this takes place. I find it hilarious that we have how many pages worth of people venting about how this situation is the key reason they change their oil...I get it, don't trust anyone with your truck. Do you we need to reiterate the same punchline every other post when Im sure the OP has already heard enough of this commentary already between the forum and probably his friends...maybe so?

I guess what Im trying to say is some of these posts are like beating a dead horse and to me seem not that beneficial for the OP. Let him work his magic and we can help him come up with options for his situation as it develops. To sit here and say that he is up front not aggressive, needs to stick it to the man may not be the best approach if the dealership already wants to work with him. Like most, I have the ability to be a dick if I need to, doesn't mean that is my first option in a situation like this.

Sorry as Im sure Im coming off a little aggressive myself in this post, but maybe we should slow it down just a tad.

If it does have an official record on the truck, I don't think I would have the fortitude to sell it to someone as they could always argue you knowingly sold them a lemon at market price. I don't think there is an official ruling against it, but it doesn't mean someone wouldn't take you to court over wrongful advertisement to try.

Side note: I had a cousin who had his transmission almost go out and sold his Titan to a guy...needless to say he didn't feel comfortable leaving his base until he got new orders. Sometimes peace of mind can be worth the extra cost.

Probably more than half of all mom and pop garages use waste oil furnaces to make heat and hot water. I don't have any type of garage or indoor area to change my oil, so during the worst of the winter I will have a garage do it. The rest of the year I do it myself and I will bring him the waste oil. Huge bonus for them, like giving them free money. Waste oil is valuable, just find a place that uses it. Chances are your local transfer station or dump will take it all year- not just on hazardous waste day.

Jaredina - paying someone to do work is fine. Even the most manly of men eventually needs someone to help him. Paul Bunyan didn't mine the ore and forge his own axe, did he? Your time is not free so if having work done on your car makes sense that's up to you. In my valuation I would rather take care of things because it seems you can't trust anyone to give even the slightly attention to doing things right anymore. But trying to DIY stuff I know takes time away from other things I could be doing instead, it's not a zero sum game.

The point here is that you took your truck to a shop that should know how to do oil changes and you expected a professional job. They screwed it up and you have every right to expect them to make it right. I disagree with some here in that you don't necessarily get a brand new engine, yours wasn't brand new when you took it in. You do get either a rebuild or a similar age and condition used engine. Or the financial equivalent of a rebuild.

No it goes into a pan and then I recycle it. The ditch just gives me a lot of extra room under the truck

The first thing a tech should do after an oil change is pull the dipstick and take a reading. If that checks out, he may then start the engine and check for leaks and the idiot light going out.

In some shops, a "2nd opinion" approach is used. Tech doing the work checks oil level and that is followed by a 2nd tech verifying that level. When this approach is used, "no fill" situations are less likely to occur.

Thanks for the update OP. You are doing the right thing. Going in the dealership and yelling won't get you a new engine. You can stick to your guns, get what you need, and still be polite about it. In my experience, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar, and you'll probably live longer, too.

Curious how much (if any) you've driven the truck since all this. Hope your sick family member gets better - dealing with that now myself and it sucks, especially long distance.

PS - to your Jaredina comment, my mother just bought one of those new VW Beetles. She loves it. Maybe that'll work out if the Tacoma doesn't!
