Thank you for emphasizing @Woodrow F Call 's point.

Yes there are some folks complaining or whining, but nothing like your overly-exaggerated portrayal.

Stick with the 2013. Please man you only have 65000 miles on it. You can easily rack up 200000 more miles on that truck. I would wait at least two years. The new tacomas are still experiencing QC problems. Give toyota two years to fix this. I needed a new truck because my 06 sport had 240000 miles and I do a lot of traveling I have had my 2017 for two months and loving it. My only complaint is the rear diff howl which i am waiting on Toyota to come up with a fix. Hold on to your gen2 for a while longer

If looks matter for your business, $25-$40k WILL go a long way in restoring and then keeping your 2013 looking pristine.

    Excellent point.

A good detail job will take care of most of the kid-induced interior issues.

As to the "they'll know it's an older truck" idea - I suspect very few people that aren't Tacoma owners could identify a 2nd vs 3rd gen Taco

    Thank you, I did.

I do wonder sometimes how much of the noise is from non-3rd gen owners piling on whenever someone does have an issue. Hasn't been enough of an interest to count up posts though.

Have previously had Gen 1's, Gen.2's ... and now the Gen. 3 that I like the best.

All of the Tacomas have had issues, but this one has been very good.

I thought the new 3.5 was not as strong as the older 4.0, but have learned how to drive the 3.5 and like it better. The 3.5 is powerful, but you just have to find the right spot to "get into it" to get the power.

Driving in "S mode" and shifting is perfect for me and I don't have to guess the power band spots.

Props to you OP for considering taking the plunge! Im afraid the day I have to let my 2nd gen go whenever that is since Im adding stuff to it. If I kept my truck completely stock and didn't really invest anything in it to make it my own then I could see being on the fence about it like you are. My guess is if you buy a 17 now, hopefully all the 3rd gen issues will be known and taken care of before you pick up a new truck. With that being said, it seems most are happy with the new changes that the 3rd gen offers. If the updated interior/capability appeals to you, the body style looks good, and you want a new different color then why not? Obviously you will take some sort of hit on money transferring back to a new ride, but unless you have heavily modified your truck, you have only lost but so much which wont get better with time.

As others say, drive both and make some real notes of what you like and dont like about the trucks. If the new one seems to be the current standard you are looking for then join the club. This forum has more than enough knowledge to keep you up to speed should you come across any 3rd gen issues and some good methods on approaching them with the dealer. Good luck OP!

But the urge was just too much, I must post...

Yes the 3rd gen section is full on whining. But take a look at a lot of the problem threads. Lots have been started by new folks, with only a few posts and only been at TW for a short time. This is common in online forums. When some one has an issue, google and then Google guides them to TW, and bam the bitching starts.

And I think you missed the point of the post you quoted. The one guy says, its a lot of non 3 gen owners stirring the pot. then some one who does not own a 3rd gen comes and makes a "ALL 3rd gens are shit" post, so he replies with there is the proof in the pudding. So his point was proved.

Clears that up pretty well. Honestly, I am considering taking a test drive in a 3rd gen just to see what I might be missing out on. I will be interested to see what you end up testing OP!

Exactly. A vehicle forum is basically a compilation of anecdotes of two main types (as well as many sub-types, mind you).

    1. Opinionated cock-swingers who tend to conflate fact/opinion.
    2. Troubled owners who took to the internet looking for advice and/or solution, and happened to land here.

Then you have human nature, which tends to focus on the negative. THEN you have a trend of entitled individuals looking for fairness in a world that will never provide it.

What a cluster, but I get to enjoy the schadenfreude while observing the chaos ... so there's that.

Financially, your 2013 has already taken the initial depreciation hit and will depreciate at a slower rate than a new 2017 will. At the mileage your maintenance needs are likely not particularly heavy so there's really no financial benefit to upgrade...as there usually isn't.

But that being said, if you can justify the additional costs, depreciation and are willing to accept potential quirks or issues that inherently come with new model vehicles before the bugs get fully worked out, do it. This truck is the first vehicle I've had in quite some time that I actually want to go out and drive every day. I love it.

    Pretty good assessment.

I'd just add the strong echo-chamber effect to really deflect things away from reality.
