OP... please don't take this the wrong way but some of the "smug bastards" comments about changing our own oil were more directed towards others reading this thread... maybe they could learn from what happened. It sounds like no matter what you don't plan on doing your own oil changes... and that's fine. Maybe others here will think twice about it now... that's all.

I was trying to be funny with the smug bastards line. I've done enough in my life to know that no one opinion is going to be right. Change your oil, cook your own food, wash your car, fix your toilet...these are all things that i am capable of doing. I also have a skilled labor job that I get paid to do.

We pick and choose what we are willing to do vs want to do. At a certain price point it isn't about saving money, but if you are happy or not.

I'm not planning on changing my oil, in any of my vehicles. Right or wrong, it is just that. Do I care if someone thinks of me as less of a man? Maybe sometimes, so I compensate by growing a beard and tying flies.

Will I get screwed again? I hope not. There are a million menial jobs out there that keep potential prison members employed and paying taxes. (I'm not implying that if you change oil you are a prison member, just that there are unskilled labor jobs that keep people employed instead of causing problems) It also keeps me from having to do the things I don't enjoy. Taking my garbage to the dump, frying burgers, mopping floors or changing my oil.

Just the way it is, I don't take any offense at people suggesting I can't change my oil. Again, it is a simple job that can be achieved by a teenager in a trench for min wage. Sometimes they fuck up, but so do doctors. Just the price of doing business these days.

Hope this settles the debate of changing your oil. Who am I kidding, let's talk about 45 vs 9mm or Ford vs Chevy! Viva la internet!

200 miles, only thing I have noticed is my steering wheel shaking at 55-60 MPH which I think is from them rotating the tires. (OEM everything, in case you are wondering) I have left a message for the GM at the dealership to call me and I'm going to take a trip out to the gun range for some therapy.
Thanks for your concern, glad that your Mom is happy with the beatle.

I don't enjoy changing my oil also. It's dirty, messy, and time consuming.

But I do it anyway to be sure it's done right. Nobody cares for my truck more than I do.

I grew up a carpenter and now am a Project Manager for a big commercial drywall firm- there is no way in hell that I would hang or tape drywall in my own house. Not one single fucking chance in hell. So I can totally relate to a mechanic not changing his own oil.

The reason I suggested the OP to go speak with a Lawyer was not to run out and file a lawsuit but they may have dealt with similar cases in the past and could tell him what and what not to do in this situation.

There is NO WAY in hell that this engine didn't suffer damage from lack of lubrication to cause a long term effect OP deserves a new engine with a lifetime power train warranty from this dealer....His truck has 15,000 miles on it and this is the fault of the dealer!!

I know we are a bunch of keyboard cowboys on this but damn if this was anyone of our trucks we would be going batshit crazy with the dealer period....

Everything that goes on at the dealer isn't reported to carfax. As a matter of fact Most is not reported.

I could easily pay someone else to change my oil. But I change my own oil for the following reasons:

-- It is always done right, no worries whatsoever. I know 100% for sure that the filter is not loose and the drain plug is not stripped. I've heard many horror stories from personal friends who took their pride and joy to a quicky-lube and they will regret it forever. Sometimes the quicky-lube place was honest and fixed it right, sometimes they weren't, point is that the nightmare could have been avoided in the first place. Peace of mind has no price tag.
-- I save considerable time and money doing it myself, on both parts and labor. (I currently make $22 per hour so the value of my own time is considered in this financial equation.) Would love to know how much I've saved over the last 30 years...
-- I can choose exactly which oil and filter will be installed, not forced to choose from their inventory. And I can top-up (if needed) without ever leaving home.
-- I am approaching 50 and I no longer "enjoy" crawling under my truck, but it's FAR better than driving to a shop and waiting an hour for a 20-minute service.

As long as I maintain good physical health, it's very easy to change my own oil. I crawl underneath 3 times: once to remove the drain plug, once to install the drain plug and change the filter, and a third time (after startup) to check for leaks.

Just going by the report I pulled when I traded my 14 TRD OR it had every service/warrantywork that went through the dealer and Toyota had a complete list of everything done as well...

My old 2000 Tacoma was badly damaged in an accident, frame was bent like a pretzel and spent 48 days at the Toyota Dealer bodyshop and it had a clean Carfax.
