I crunched my rear bumper recently (CBI rear bumper with sensor cutouts on it's way) and according to my dash and display, the sensors are not working. I'm not sure if they are damaged and need to be replaced, or the hit made them error and it just needs to be reset.

I'm hoping to be putting the bumper on this weekend, if not then early next week. I wonder if anyone's had experience with these sensors just needing to be reset, and if so, is this something I can do, or is the dealer needed?

Probably needs to be replaced. The sensors are hard wired and there's not a lot of clearance behind them. The part numbers for the 16+ tacomas are 89341-0C011. There are currently no aftermarket alternatives I've found. This part number shows compatible with 2015 Tundras but is not the original part number for them. 89341-0C010 is, which has cheap chinese alternatives you can try out.

I personally busted the black plastic retainer trying to remove the step pad to straighten the bumper, and had to do this investigation in doing so, as that retainer is not a separate part. Seeing as the Tundra is able to use both 0C011 and 0C010 sensors, I'm assuming the Tacoma will be the same. Cheap gamble.

No problem! If you don't want to gamble, I have one on order, should be here this weekend. I'm only going to use the retaining clip for mine, but I can try the 010 sensor to see if it works in lieu of the 011 and report back.

That would be great! Having aftermarket bumper installed today and will attach the non-working sensors for now and wait for your report. Thanks again!

Good news! The 20 dollar sensor works flawlessly. Exact same size, design, connector. Outside of being slightly more of a matte color, looks virtually indistinguishable from the original. Replaced the 0C011 with this one that actually has the part number 0C020 (alternate part number to 0C010) and no errors and while waving my hand in front of each sensor, it worked the same as all the others.

Obviously won't be able to speak to long term use since I'm just swapping out the retaining cap, but I'd say go for it.

Here it is installed (left side). If you wanted to reallllly get picky, the plastic is a shade lighter on the black scale, but I doubt anyone would know unless you pointed it out.

underneath the plastic ornaments they call a bumper is there a hidden bumper that will absorb some impact? i would expect that plastic crap will break from a wind blown runaway shopping cart. if mine ever get busted up i will then pop for a real steel bumper.

I didn't see anything worthy of absorbing impact. I had the tow package, so basically the bumper was the tow hitch infrastructure, with some plastic padding. I just got the truck back today with the CBI T3 bumper. Very happy!

I replaced my rear bumper as well. Bought the diy sensors and restraining clips. Do they sensors have to go in order? Or can they each go whereever . I keep getting an error
