I'll give the narrative to start.

So this past weekend my friend and I were on our way back from duck hunting, everything was going well and we parked and went into a store to grab some food, we were in there for 15 minutes tops then came out to the truck.

When I started the truck a really loud "knocking/ slapping" sound was coming from the engine and i turned it off immediately, opened the hood to see if I could see anything. Started it again and the sound continued, so I turned it off and checked around to see if anything was hitting anything else, couldn't find anything. Started it again and the sound lasted about 5 seconds and the knocking/slapping sound went away and a loud belt squeaking noise continued and started smoking, turned off the vehicle and tried to find where it was giving enough friction to smoke lightly. I tried to internet diagnose the problem and I read a lot about a/c compressors going out so i thought maybe it was that. My buddies mechanic (he called) said that as long as the pulley for the a/c is turning it will squeak loudly but i should be fine to drive home.

So I had to make an hour drive from Fallon, Nevada to Reno, Nevada. I decided to try it out but i wanted to do a hot lap around the dirt parking lot first; I did one lap and it tarted smoking really bad from the belt so i cut the engine and when I got out I heard the Belt snap from under the hood. So now we have to pick it up tomorrow and figure out how to fix it.

My truck is a 2005 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-road V6 4x4 Access cab.

I think it could be the fan clutch or the a/c pulley from what I could think of but i don't know enough to diagnose. Does the fan run all the time? the was running when it happened, also the a/c pulley was turning.
    Anything helps really!

Try to spin the A/C pulley and alternator pulleys by hand as a first clue as to what might have frozen. I had a belt shred due to sheer age and some strands got wrapped around the fan pulley/clutch.

My belt smoked from the ac compressor getting all seized up . Pull the AC fuse and you should be good to go .
The downfall with our ac compressors is that they also come on to defrost your windows first thing in the am .
Thats what killed my compressor ,
The AC light will blink if you have the problem mind you

Good to know that we can just pull the a/c fuse and deal with the problem later. Will we still be able to use defrost when doing this?

It is likely seized pulley related, but could be any pulley the belt is in contact with. Check them all.

So when I check, all pulleys should turn without resistance correct?

Yes, check that all of the pulleys turn freely (idlers, a/c, alt, etc). For the belt to let go that quickly I'd assume that one of the pulleys seized. Were you using the a/c at the time the belt broke?

I was not using my a/c but it was in the defrost position.
Also, if I buy a belt from Toyota today, and I pull the fuse it should work until I get the part I need?
    Which fuse is it?

If your belt snapped, it shouldn't take more than 20/30 seconds to figure out the culprit. Just removing the AC fuse will not correct a totally frozen pulley. You still need to diagnose the problem, go ahead and get your belt, but do not install until you figure out what is the matter....

Copy that, thanks for all the help.
I'll get more info in a few hours when I get to my truck.
I don't plan on starting it but if I do will it effect anything?

If the pulley is still seized your belt will brake again. Also If it were me I wouldn't be going to the dealer for the belt, oreilly or autozone should have some on hand, and they will be much cheaper, so much so that if your worried about it you can pick up a couple.

Edit-That is if you put the belt back on before fixing the issue. IF you start it without the belt just dont let it run for too long.

It will be ok for a brief period, but not too long..........

You'll have no coolant circulation, no charging system and no power steering.

Ok to relocate the vehicle a little, not ok to drive any distance.

If you have any friends or family with AAA or some roadside assistance have them drive out there with you, and you can get a free tow back to Reno, then fix it at your house instead of a parking lot will make things much easier if its an option.

Yeah the plan was to rent a trailer from uhaul for 60 bucks then tow it back and to the job in my garage, hopefully my truck is doing fine, been there a few days so that's why I haven't got an update on what I have found out yet.

Also, an auto zone belt will be fine? I've used them for other parts before but nothing this interior if you will. They are way cheaper from my experience

Ya they will be fine, if your worried and on a long trip you can carry a spare, but I wouldn't be worried, oreilly and autozone are where I have always bought my belts, bearings, water pumps, etc etc... and I have never had a bad experience.

Your braver than I, I would never leave my truck in Fallon for a night let alone three. Uhaul is a good plan too.

Ditto, hope the whole truck is still there when you go to pick it up.

Yes, it'll be fine to run briefly to drive the truck up on the trailer.

Find the pulley that is seized before starting/working on the truck so that things aren't hot when you stick your hands down there.

If all of the pulleys spin freely then it may be the a/c clutch. No need to pull the a/c fuse, just don't use the a/c or defrost and the clutch won't kick on.

Also check the pulleys for forward/aft wobble. Hopefully it's just a tensioner or idler pulley.
