I'll add that my 2017 now has about 1200 miles on it. I have none of the issues that have been posted in here. I have nothing but good things to say about the truck, and look forward to getting my lift/level/wheels/tires. I didn't do upgrades to my 2013 because I had a feeling I'd be wanting one of these 3rd gens, and I was right. If you're feeling an urge to upgrade to the new hotness, that's probably not going to go away.

Thanks for all the replies. I do take all the issues with a grain of salt -- when I was looking into getting the 2013 I checked this forum and all the talk was about how the 2012 redesign had ruined a perfectly good truck, rampant tranny issues, differential problems, engine and body were too big....

My 2013 took about 10k miles to break in and tranny to settle down, but has been great w no issues whatsoever.

So I appreciate all the replies and I guess I was primarily interested in comparisons assuming everything is in working order. My main concern was the smaller engine in a slightly bigger frame but it sounds like it still has as much giddy up.

Know what your talking about before you post things. If you like your reliable truck then keep it. I will keep my reliable 2016. Just because you read here of some people having problems doesn't mean its not a good truck. Go to 2nd gen truck forums and I think you will find people reporting problems with their truck. Why post about 3rd gen if you don't own one, shouldn't you be in 2nd gen forum telling everyone about your bulletproof truck.

I like to be involved in all aspects of this community and learn...this was well stated though. If you never owned a 3rd gen, you cant keep using your buddies woes as a means to shoot down these trucks. Also keep in mind, sooner or later these issues will be addressed. I am happy in my reliable 2012, granted at one time it was a problem child as well. Just some trucks have more growing pains than others.

After previously owning a 4th Gen 4Runner and currently owning a first model year FJ Cruiser and mid production Toyota Land Cruiser 100 series, Toyota is hella slow on rolling out fixes for issues. It takes about 3 years to a mid-cycle refresh until Toyota has a handle on these issues:

2016: Sorry but you guys are the guinea pigs for issues that arise as a first model year.

2017: Toyota has identified EARLY issues through the 2016 owners and is figuring out fixes for them.

2018-2019: Toyota implements fixes of EARLY issues identified on the 2016-2017. At the same time, Toyota identifies LATER issues on higher mileage 2016's.

2019-2020: Toyota may figure out a fix or not depending on how high the mileage the later issues pop up.

2021: Toyota releases a 4th gen Tacoma and everyone on TW dogs on all its issues, citing their problem free 3rd gens as how Toyota is going to shit.

Interesting -- I wonder if that will normalize with more mileage -- I do remember my 2013 hunting for gears quite a bit for the first several thousand miles -- enough to the point I had the jitters about it.

Well, I am at 4500 on it now, nothing has changed with the transmission shifting weird. I have experimented with a few things though, here we go:
    1. Regular gas gets the best mileage. I have tried multiple times with mid and high grade.
    2. Gas mileage not great over 65mph. I took a 100 mi drive today 50 mi each way. On the way there I drove normally (kind of aggressive) around 70mph mostly highway some lights and hills, trip said 16.5mpg avg. On the way back (due to nav saying 49mi to go and tank saying I had 50mi left) I drove conservatively, slow starts and not over 61mph. I pulled up to the gas station near my house and the tank said I had 12 mi left, shut the car off ant the trip said 24.5mpg avg.
    3. I bought a tonneau cover today, I pick it up tomorrow, we will see how that goes. I will let you know if interested.
    4. I still like the comfort and relatively smooth ride, everything works as it should. (Lately Amazon prime music app, while playing music fine, tends to stick on a song for display. Could be the app though so, not sure yet. This did not happen until the latest IOS update.)

Sorry, most of this was about mpg but in my case its a daily driver so... I do want to take it off-road but its a 2.5 hour drive to do that for me, I have not had the chance yet. I do not want to go by myself and Rausch Creek says you have to have 2 people, its hard to find people on the same schedule as me.

I have not seen anyone attempt to answer your original question regarding acceleration but maybe I skimmed past. IMO the third gen feels "mushy" and you have to get on the pedal more than other vehicles I have owned and driven but when you do it will go. Test drives are free. See if you like it or not.

This is my first Tacoma so I can't make any comparisons to older models.. 1400 miles, none of the issues reported here and loving mine so far..

Not as much power as my old Dodge Dakota, but it was a V8.

There's also this possibility to consider:

If you can't afford a decent, reasonable quality vehicle you must not be worth much.

I don't want my HVAC guy pulling up in G550 Benz, I would think I might be getting boned. But a Tacoma? The 550 is champagne and caviar, the Tacoma is Steak n Shake. Anyone that begrudges you earning a decent wage in return for providing a valued service (not flipping hamburgers, community organizer, or aroma therapy consultant) isn't worth worrying about.

That was not really a redesign at all, no major component changes.
