After back to back flats with Toyota's Kevlar lined stock POS tires I'm going to go back to what I know holds up well on the NW gravel.

    I don't have a lift... yet.

I know I can go with a 265/75r16 but I'm wondering if anyone has tried the 255/85r16 both are E rated. The 255s are essentially a 33x10.50. I know a lot of guys have had rubbing issues the 285/75r16 on the upper control arms because of the extra width. But any issues with the overall diameter? Thanks.

Likely rub ... most likely... also why are you looking at E rated tires? They add a lot of un-sprung weight and gain no advantage other than making your truck work a lot harder to get the wheels turning. E rated tires are for larger trucks...LT or "C" rated will be good enough.

I'm less concerned about the additional weight than I am with theoverall structural integrity. I don't like flat tires especially from simple gravel road travel and have never had any luck with the lighter weight tires.

They make decent at/mt tires for off road in an C rating... a lot of folks here didn't like the feel of acceleration after going to those big ass heavy E rated tires. Not to mention fuel econ. I think some of those E rated tires are like 15-20#s heavier per tire... thats a lot of extra weight out on the wheels where it will make the most (negative performance) difference.... next mod after that you will want to re-gear.

    Two things :

    1. LT is E, open the specs on a tire you see listed as LT and you will see that the actual rating is E.

    2. " gain no advantage " - you are dead wrong, wrong, wrongity wrong wrong. E rated tires are heavier because they have up to quadruple the strength / thickness. You probably don't do much off-roading there in Philly but if you did you would understand that C rated tires get destroyed by rocks and gravel. The weight is a very worthwhile trade off for knowing you don't need to change a flat everything you wheel.

I have Toyo MT 265/70R17 E rated tires with 4R Pro wheels on my Tacoma, haven't noticed a MPG fuel difference.
