Hey guys I'm looking on Amazon for a backup camera and monitor. I was thinking that since my radio headunit has a video input, maybe I just just use that instead of getting another monitor to clutter my dash up. How would I wire it so that when I shift into reverse, my headunit displays mthe backuo cera angle without pausing my music or disconnecting my phone from the USB port? (USB port is connected behind the unit and runs under the console to beside my cup holder so it isn't pictured).... Is that too much trouble? If so, I guess I should just get a seperate minitor. What to you all think?

    Any help is much appreciated

Since your head unit has a video-in port, that usually signifies it's for a backup camera. Look into the settings on your head unit that says anything about a backup camera, that usually means your unit has the capability of doing so. My head unit has an video input for the backup camera, and an input for the brake light harness (to detect if you're in reverse). Your unit may be different, but mine works by detecting voltage through the brake lights and triggering the unit to switch to video. I didn't bother hooking this wire up so I just manually turn the camera on the unit by going into settings.

I wired a single video cable from the head unit under the carpet, under the door running boards, into a cable grommet under the door. I zip-tied it to the brake light wiring harness (absolute PITA) and ran it to my license plate where I mounted it. I spliced the 5v rail from the backup light in the taillight assembly to power it, thus the camera only turns on when the backup light is on (when in Reverse).

No problem, make sure you have a whole bunch of zip ties and a side cutter or you're gonna have a bad time.

For the wiring harness within the unused wires there would be a reverse sensing wire. it will either be labled or shown in the manual.

My head unit actually has an input for a front camera. I have the backup camera that mounts to the license plate screws.

Could you elaborate? I want to have my backup camera powered on demand, not only in Reverse. I don't feel like zip-tying a wire all the way to the taillights again.

Zip tied a wire all the way haha. In one of the empty switch holes left of my steering wheel I put in a switch. Then when I wired it up I ran the camera power to the camera and also connected the reverse sensing wire to the switch. This makes it so that when the switch is on the camera will come on and the radio will switch over to camera mode. I know that some cameras video cables have power built into them so you only have one wire to run back.

EDIT: I got an add a fuse to tap into the fuse box behind the coin holder. I did this so he switch leds are only on when the truck is

Wow, they do make switches for everything. What would I wire the reverse sensing leads on the radio to again? I don't recall.

On my radio I believe it was a blue wire. When the radio senses ~12v to that wire it automatically switches to show what the camera is showing.

So I would just tap into a 12v source (backup lights) and tie it into the sensing wire? From what I understand, you run a 12v cable from the taillights and combine the positive wire with the sensing wire.

If you want it to turn on the camera when ever you want you will need a separate 12v supply than the reverse lights.. Thats why I added a fuse on the inside so both the camera and the radio get the 12v power independent from the reverse lights. I will try to draw a quick diagram of what I did.

Right now I have it tapped into the reverse lights. Say I gave it a constant 12v source (like from the fusebox), how would I wire the switch?

If it is a simple switch like the unlit black one in my picture its easy.

On one pin of the switch you have the 12v power from the fuse box. Then the other pin you connect the power out of the switch to both the camera and to the radio. The power to the camera and radio both come from the same pin.

    Diagrams coming soon

Diagram of the switch wiring (simple switch with no led lighting). Switches with lights in them will have more pins. If you wire your camera and sensing wire to a switch with its own 12v power you will not need to tap into the taillights anymore. this will also allow you to turn the camera on when ever you want.

    • Pin 1 in the diagram is where the 12v power comes from the fuse box to the switch
    • Pin 2 in the diagram is where both the camera and sensing wire 12v power leaves the switch when the switch is on

Say you had a switch with backlighting, how would it be hooked up in that case?

Depends on how advanced the switch is. I used to have one that only had 3 pins

    • Top pin - Ground for backlight circuit (makes it so that when the switch is at on position the light turns on as well)
    • Middle pin - Power out to accessories
    • Bottom pin - Power in to the switch

This is the switch I have now. It has 5 pins on the back of it. With my switch the lower text that says "Rear Camera" lights up as soon as the truck turns on and the amber led behind the picture of the camera turns on when the camera is on.

Here is the diagram for the switch and the a picture of the things the pins do.

    • Both pin 7 & 8 go to ground (this grounds the circuit for the LED lights in the switch only)
    • Pin 2 is the incoming 12 power
    • Pin 3 is the outgoing to camera and switch
    • Pin 6 is the power to the led light that turns on when the truck turns on (gives power the the LED light that lights up with the power is given to the switch)
