That's pretty good for a 4x4. I drive with a light foot, and my X-Runner gets about 18 mph in town, and ~24 mpg on the interstate rolling 65-70. I've seen 26 mpg several times driving a secondary road where the speed limit is 55-60...and keeping it at the speed limit. Now if I get a heavy foot, my city driving will drop into the 15-16 mpg range.

Three tips: keep your Tacoma "tuned up" (including clean air filters), always stay on top of your tire pressures, and make sure your wheel alignment is correct.

Dad's 1st gen got pretty piss poor mpg if I recall. Neighborhood of 14-16mpg. It's a 5 speed with stock suspension/tires.
But I'm spoiled with my current daily I guess..~47mpg in my TDI :D

My first gen was a 95 3.4 5 speed and out on the road I could get like 22 and 23 with it... quite a bit better than my current 14 -15!

My observation has been the difference between 65 mph and 80 mph is substantial however the difference between 80 mph and 90 mph wasn't notable. Driving out on the interstate in Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota was a great experience ;)

Interestingly enough... at least from my UltraGauge estimating MPGs live... I get better MPGs @ 80mph than I do at 75mph. How does that make sense? lol

It doesn't, use a calculator and divide miles driven by gallons pumped... scan gauge- sham gauge, those can only estimate mileage and not confirm it with actual numbers.

Stock bumpers are more aerodynamic than offroad bumpers. It's basically just an air dam - one of the reasons I haven't been in a hurry to replace mine.

@Kyitty , you could be finding a sweet spot at 80 mph where the truck isn't struggling so much to push your truck's fat ass (all that armor)

It's probably a miscalculation though. You're so over geared that I imagine 35 mph is your truck's sweet spot.

I drove from Cheyenne Wyoming to Denver and back twice in two days. Day 1 was horribly windy. The WyDOT signs were saying 65 mph gusts and I saw several of these blown over semis. I got 16.3 MPG on the highway. Yesterday was much calmer. I could tell the gas gauge was moving a lot slower. I ended up getting 19.3 MPG. Glad I can get better than 16 mpg highway though. I was worried that would be the new normal.

LOL Yeah who knows. With 4.56's on 33's I'm definitely over geared. Too bad that doesn't make the truck any quicker on the freeway on ramp. lol

She's fat alright (armor) but she's got squatter's legs.. ;)
