If you dont have a hose, you need to put something under the filter assembly to catch the oil.

No need, at least on a '10 reg cab 2.7L 4wd. the oil filter is accessed from underneath on the passenger side and is mounted upright (although slightly canted). Very easy, especially if you first remove the engine skid plate (4wd models) first. Even with the skid plate in place you can readily access the O/Fwith minimal acrobatics. I just prefer removal (4- 12mm bolts) and the stock plate has tabs to hold it in place so you don't need 3 hands to do the job. With the plate removed it is one of the easiest vehicles I've ever changed the oil on.

Yeah, thanks for the info! But I already went ahead and did it last night - you're right, no mess or fuss, got a little oil on my arm, but that's why I wear a special (dirty) sweatshirt for oil changes.

I just stick an empty water bottle there to catch it.

What's the size of the drain plug washer? Is it anything special, or can you get an aluminum gasket washer from Autozone?

If you buy the Toyota oil filters, they will come with a new gasket.

But I bought a Mobil 1 filter, and it didn't come with one. My dealership is 30 min away, and there's an Advance Auto down the street. If I knew the size I could buy one there in a pack of 4 for like $2.25. Anyone know the size?

What's wrong with you dealership, when I bought an oil filter for my wifes camry I noticed there was not a gasket in the box, I told the parts guy and he went and got me 3 to take, no charge:)

xodeuce, I think your auto store will be able to look up the info you need, I'm pretty sure these gaskets are nearly all the same for the toyotas, my 86 toyota truck, 95 camry and my 09 Tacoma look to all take the same gasket.

In the process of letting mine drain as I type this. I found out another alternative to using the hose from the filter drain thing. Turns out a big plastic cup form a place like McAllister's or a football game or something fits there perfectly. It's probably 32oz. It rests in the cavity below the filter perfectly, and takes up nearly the entire opening. I'll do the hose next time, but that'll work in a pinch.

I just posted a review of the fumoto drain valve HERE.... It enabled me to change my oil with ease and not spill one DROP onto the driveway. Makes changing the oil a breeze. I am very pleased with this product.

    Basically:

You might be interested in this link. Wix oil filter is shown but after you watch that mobile 1, fram, amsoil, bosch, fram tough guard and purolator are all on the right of the screen. Check them out. Wix looks real good. Fram looks like garbage. Amsoil look very good but is probably expensive. The Wix can be had for about $6. The Fram is $3 or $4 but after you see what's inside, isn't your Taco worth the extra $2. Mine is. Side links didn't show but if you go to Youtube and search Wix oil filter you will see the links on the right. Screwy, now it shows.

Do you use a torque wrench to put the oil pan drain plug back? How do you insure 30 ft/lbs with out one?

A calibrated elbow? After you have torqued a few nuts, bolts, and drain plugs, you develop the feel so you don;t strip out nthreads and yet don't start leaking.

Some people can do it, others couldn't get it even with a torque wrench :)
