It's unfortunate you didn't hang on to it. The transmission TSB solved the transmission issues which I had also at the beginning. The rear end used with the 3.5 is the same as the 2.7 so really nothing different there. None of that can compete with the $10,000 price difference though. When I bought my SR double cab 4x4 V6 I got the color keyed package which was a must for me and really every other option I wanted. Cost me $31,918 out the door which I was perfectly happy with. I've never driven one with the 2.7 but I knew I was going to lift it immediately and run larger tires. I wanted the extra power to help with that. I would like to drive one with the 2.7 though just so I can experience it and see what it's got under its belt

 

I can't seem to get under 22mpg so far. I've been hauling bed full of wood w/ plenty of city driving on my lower mpg fuel ups so far. While the numbers can be close, an apples to apples comparison puts the 2.7L well ahead in terms of mpg (especially on the city end, not so much on the hwy end). This is real world talk, not Monroney sticker numbers.

With that said, if the bugs were worked out on the 3.5L I would've had no problem paying the extra 8-10k for a TRD. I feel like it would have been a worthy compromise, as it would have left me room to grow into a more powerful towing truck (instead of possibly growing out of the 2.7).

There is also cost to maintain, which is no contest. The 3.5L has a great deal of complexity wrt helping Toyota adhere to CAFE standards, only time will tell how expensive it will be to maintain long term (this is with the bugs worked out). This is the way the automotive industry is moving, so we'll all be neck deep in it at some point.

Where I'm going with this: The tried and true 2.7L is a piece of history considering how long it has been in service ... so I like that I've gotten the relatively untainted drive train so late in the game (even considering the 2015 updates). 20 years from now, these machines will be a relic.

People also seem to think that the 2.7L is a dog. I mean, it is what it is ... but I think this belief is bandied about the forums due to some unhealthy preconceived notions. It actually does very well, IMO.

 

A small lift, 265's and removing the air damn will help your 22mpg problem.. just kidding. I do have all of those things and in the right gear this truck actually goes along pretty good. It seems to get better with time. I actually passed a car last night which I was sure I would never do in this truck.

 

'A small lift, 265's and removing the air damn will help your 22mpg problem' check, check, and check.. hahahaha. It hurt my mpg a bit, but whatever. I have no need to go with bigger tires ever. 265s are plenty for the little 4banger. They work quite nicely with it and look great on it.

 

No noticable difference with the AFE Filter correct? The only two mods I want to do in the future are the LCE header and a 3rd Gen softtopper in black for camping.

 

It seemed to help a little actually, a little better throttle response. I'm not sure if there is a secondary charcoal filter to be removed on my truck or not.. ? I just threw in the AFE and called it a day. I have heard good things about that header...I will keep mine all stock for a long time til it rots out or something. I have heard mixed things about the softtoppers, but i think they look great.

 

No lift planned, but I've already purchased 265/65R17 (the 'other' stock size) Cooper Discoverer AT3's. Still waiting on my FN wheels to come in, which will put me at about 4lbs heavier per wheel assembly. The wheels are lighter, so the added weight will be out in the rubber where it can do the most damage to mpg, we'll see but I don't expect much of a change.

 

For any of you guys looking to add fog lights to your SR, check out this switch. The white LED matches the stock switches perfectly. This fits in the smaller blank to the left of the steering wheel.

How bright is the light on that switch? My buddy has one that's blinding while driving at night. While going straight it's okay, but if you turn it blinds you. And yes I'm talking about the light that illuminates the switch itself

 

Also, I miss my AT's but I'm a little concerned about a massive loss of MPG. Should I do 265/70/16 on stock wheels or find some other OEM Toyota 17" aluminum wheels and get 265/65/17? No lift planned.

 

I have 4Runner 17" rims... I love them... I'm running on 265 65.. those rims are cheap and very good looking.. actually there is a tw member that is selling a set.. check my profile pic...

 

My buddy's Dad has his stock 2015 4 runner wheels sitting in his garage. It's so tempting....I could probably get them for cheap too.

 

you know, everybody wants the trd rims but there is other cheaper and good looking options like my rims or others...

 

They may or may not come with kits all over ebay. The kit I bought came with a switch that looked just like it but had incandescent bulbs so it looked terrible. I used OEM glass fogs with 30 watt LED bulbs

I have both sr 4 banger and the trdor v6 my sr gets around 17.34 average milage I use fuel log on my phone I have 117 fill-ups. Here is my stats. I have been using since day 1. And wait till you get around 15k on it and you will love the power it will have nothing like the v6 but definitely noticeable. Sill 6th gear is useless. I haul 800lbs of weight or more around all the time.

 

What is the name of that app?
