I prefer rolling to folding, personally I don't like hanging stuff off of my bag unless it's drying in the sun or some kind of similar need. Don't use my daisy chains for sleeping bag, either.

Folding pads take up a fixed amount of space, whereas a rolling pad can be opened up inside your pack and become a pack wall of sorts, all your gear can then be packed inside of it which makes it an easier carry for me.

I have 3 rollers, I think SoLite.. and an inflatable Thermarest Pro.

There are some other technical differences, but as it's been stated, it's mainly the difference between rolling vs. folding.

There have been a few murders along that trail. A couple (man & woman) 25 years ago in the Pennsylvania portion.
The two women you might be thinking of were in 1996 in Shenandoah National Park 1/2 mile off the AT.
There have been 4 other incidents starting in 1986 near or around the AT up to that 1996 double murder.
The FBI investigated as a serial killer. The victims were both men and women.
Personally I stay super vigilant and carry when I am outside. I have pretty good gut instinct and common sense goes a long way.
There is always just being in the wrong place at the wrong time though.
Risk assessment is always my friend.
Also a weapon, spray, a sharp eye scratcher I'll go down fighting.

That's a legit topic, unfortunately. This thread was made for gear and backpacking BS and that falls in that category! Trail safety is a concern for everybody.

I an just drawing the line at California commentary. That is not in line with the intentions of the thread and not welcome, snarky or otherwise.

Sorry to be that guy, but hope y'all understand my viewpoint.

    Carry on.

The issue with the AT is that most of it is within 2 miles of road access.
I found that crappy campers (as opposed to backpackers and others out there to enjoy nature) are only willing to go about a mile or less to camp. That puts many of the AT shelters within reach. And that's where the flock to.

When I pitch camp, I never stay at shelters and try to be more than 1.5 miles from a road crossing.

I'd do more winter camping but nearly everything here closes in the winter so I've got no where to go. One Yellowstone CG stays open, couple state parks, couple nearby fishing accesses too but they're generally the site of the high school keggers. Not really what I want to deal with while camping.

I'll take my chances with those odds. Much less of a risk out there than in the city, IMO. I'll roll the dice.

Back to gear, though. Got a cool GoPro alligator clamp that is low profile so I can put my camera right on my shoulder strap and not have to wear some stupid chest harness thing. Well worth the $8. Makes a great little pivoting stand, too.

It tilts and swivels so you can adjust it pretty easy. Clamp it on and go, or quickly remove it and use it like a little short tripod or handle so you don't get your hands in the way of the lens.

I picked up this stove package for my 10x10 spike tent.

    http://www.coloradocylinderstoves.com/Mesa-Stove-Package-MSP-17111G.htm

    Stove dimensions are 17"L X 11"W X 10"H.

On the smaller side, but I don't need the tent to be a sauna.

I've got a pallet full of red oak cut to size to burn in this stove.

I've already done the initial burn in my yard to burn off paint, etc.

If anyone has this stove, or perhaps one of similar size & style, what can I expect for burn time if I load it up and shut things down for the night. Note, there is no gasket on the door, but it does close right.

Just curious how many times I may need to get up and load it.

I have that stove. I used it camping from the truck and fueled it with scrape cedar and pine. That stuff burns pretty quick and only lasted 2-3 hours completely stuffed. Same goes for just dead limbs and other dry stuff I could find around camp. You might get more burn time from that hard wood and maybe some bigger chunks? Mine were about 1"x1" by the length of the stove.

My friend had a very similar stove we just used in his canvas hunting tent last weekend. The stove and tent got really hot and did a great job. My friend fed it wood pellets made from sawdust. They would last about 3-4 hours; my friend paired it with a thermoelectirc fan which helped circulate the hot air a ton.

Great! Thanks for that info. Cedar & Pine do burn fast, so I should get longer burn time with the oak. The pieces are bigger too. If I can get 6 hrs...I can deal with getting up once in the night. And it would be still going when I get up. Much appreciated.

Picked up a 10' Luminnoodle this past week to test out on the awning this weekend. Also got a Anker battery pack to be able to run it plus charge a phone at the same time.

    [IMG]https://www.amazon.com/Luminoodle-L...id=1476836738&sr=8-1&keywords=luminoodle&th=1

Found out today they are coming out with a 20' version that can also dim with three settings and has a red mode for nightime and a 5' multicolor version as well. Depending on how the 10' version works, I may have to pick up the 20' version.

I have one of the other random brands of this product on Amazon. It works well. For other accessories, just keep checking amazon or set an alert. I got the car suction mount for much cheaper than retail.
