The AC60F is the 4wd version of the 3rd gen 6cyl 6speed automatic transmission, while the AC60E is the 2wd variant.
Sure have to be aware of my wording as it easily spirals out of control lol End Quote
To be precise my question was whether any other maker was also making these AC60F trannys!! I asked this question, based on my 2010 experience where some parts were being made in Japan, and some in Mexico. They mixed up these two parts manufactures parts on my 2010,at the assembly line, and f--ked up my transmission quill, clutch, etc.
Anyway that is another story,I appreciate your replies, and if I understand it,there is only one maker of the trannies for [ auto 4x4 V6 2016-2017 ] So my understanding now is that the vin# is the deciding factor on the likliehood of tranny issues, yet not all experience this or do they if there vin #s are in the posted vins? My truck is SR5 V6 4x4 AT. Hope this is more clear. Thanks

Your question is difficult to answer. I work in global manufacturing myself. I can All but guaranty that the AC60(x) has parts from different factories. Which factories, and where, are likely Toyota secrets that would be difficult to unravel.

Warning long and boring and most likely obvious to many of you and may have been said before .
I am no expert but have been reading here for months on this ( may have missed some posts )and worked in machining for 37 + years. The AC60F 's out there range from really bad delays in shifting from park to D and Park to R etc. Major flaring to minor flaring to none at all . Also no upshift in Cruise to higher gears at the crest of hills and we all know this. I am convinced that this is a quality control problem in the machining , weak springs . assembly or seals of the valve bodies , bad castings or whatnot but it is a physical problem. The reprogramming of the ECM is nothing other than a tweak to allow more time for the valves to work because they are tight and slow moving or sloppy and leaking etc. ( thus the flaring)
I am fortunate to have a good one that must have the parts made in the center of the tolerances , just right so to speak ..
I had the TSB done because I felt I had the upshift at hill cresting problem . Now , 2000 miles after the TSB , I really do not think there is much of a change . It depends on the hill for how it upshifts in cruise .
I have watched for flares and never saw or felt one before or after the TSB and never had a delay or hard shift and I have 3600 miles now.
There could not be really good problem free ones pre TSB if there was a problem in the programming .
This could not happen if there was a computer programming problem unless there are corrupted programs being flashed to the ECM . If this is the case I am wrong , but it seems unlikely as there would be owners talking about having it reflashed a second time . I have not heard of that happening and I do not think Toyota is that inept . I believe Toyota is trying to apply a bandage so they do not have to replace as many of the AC60F's in 2016/17's with problems deemed excessive . The TSB may hide the problem on enough AC60F's for the owners to put up with it and it may go 100,000 miles that way. Time will tell . I also believe the holly grail of a New Tacoma would have Every part made to the center of the tolerances from the beginning to the end of the drive line . This would be the one that gets the highest MPG and last the longest ect. if every part was engineered perfectly .

I guess the lucky ones are the owners of a AC60F's with really good ones then slightly bad that get free extended warranty then maybe really bad that get a free replacement that turns out to be a good one , then the rest that have been deemed in the normal range . Remember there are a lot of Tacoma owners who do not read here and just believe whatever the dealer tells them .
Again , this may all be obvious but it seems there are some waiting for a quick and perfect fix that probably will not be coming on anything but future trucks when and if Toyota does it's job.
If I am right ,Toyota has dropped the ball on this big time and are all about the dollar first and pride and reputation second.

Great read Taco. I think you are probably right. There is one more dimension to this as well. Aisin wanted to reuse some components, tooling, and CAD from previous transmissions. Valve bodies, being pressure commanded control systems, work not only with circuits being pressurized, but some actions are commanded from pressure differentials. If, like you said, the tolerances are off a little, these differential pressures can go out of whack. As a side note: I know the techs and engineers, working on my truck, were trying to recreate an air pocket, in one of the valve body circuits, due to leakdown while sitting idle, in my transmission. Thermal/Fluid dynamics... Not easy...

Al well and said, we all, from what I read, are sitting on a ticking time bomb. This makes me very uneasy about the future and reliability of my 40k truck...

Thanks to all contributors to this forum, very reassuring knowing so much mechanical and engineering experience gives one the feeling of not being on an island with zero support. Please continue the outpouring of information in reference to our 2016 power train issues. Thanks in advance, Mikey4X4.

2017 Tacoma here, with 1,500 miles now. The vehicle hunts for gears on the highway like crazy. Only solution is to drive it in Sport and with the ECT button on. Shouldn't have to do this... :annoyed:

My 2017 Access Cab SR5 V6 Automatic has about 500 miles on it now. I notice the transmission searches for shifting points a lot. Especially when using the cruise control. As my wife pulled into or parking spot today it heard it ticking loudly. I opened the hood and the ticking in the motor seems loudest on the passenger side rear. Also the rear differential makes a lot of noise. Anyone know where I can look up 3rd Gen TSB's?

First of all the engine is noisy. More than my 2nd gen. If makes a loud clickity clack when it is in the injector cleaning cycle. That is probably what you heard. I have nearly 8000 on mine with no engine issues and it is still noisy. It is partially from the lightweight thin aluminum wall engine. Don't sweat it. I was shocked when I parked my 2016 next to my 2008. The 16 is much noisier. And I thought the 08 was noisy.

As far as the transmission hunting, search the forums for 3rd gen shift feeling TSB as is written in the title of this thread. As for the rear end noise, can you describe the noise and what provokes the noise?

I believe what your hearing is the injectors alternating. We have injectors in the intake manifold as well as in the cylinder (direct injection). If I am not mistaken, the "ticking" is when the intake manifold injectors are running when the vehicle goes through it's self cleaning cycle.

Just had the TSB done on my taco. They flashed the engine and transmission, instantly felt better when driving and shifting...Much better..

The ticking sound you hear could also be the self cleaning feature...

Don't get used to it...had mine flashed at 8000 miles. Drove great for weeks then one day it just started acting like it did before the flash. I'm at 15000 miles now and I have found if disconnect the battery and let it re learn every 1200 miles or so. After about 1200 miles it's loosing it's memory or something.

I have also noticed after the flash....the truck is more peppy with the AC on vrs off. so wierd.

    Same here.

I reset my tables 2 weeks ago and have been driving in ECT and it's tolerable, but not perfect.

I'll be doing an ECT on all the time mod this weekend.
