image.jpg Just bought a 2001 Tacoma double cab 4x4 limited TRD. What a search it has been. I did not realize how rare these trucks are. Luckily I was able to get the color I wanted also silver. As of now I have purchased a 6" fab tech lift, 34" trail grapplers, and some wheels yes 20's. I know most of y'all don't like them but it's a pavement pownder with a few trips to the beach. This truck is auto V6 with stock 4.10 gears. I plan on keeping between 33" and 34" tire. What would be the best all around gear. This for mainly highway and around town driving. I've been doing a lot of reading. I'm thinking a 4.56. All input would be great help. Here is the truck.

Congrats on the purchase -- great platform of a truck to build on.

I'd recommend 4.88s for a re-gear. My truck is a automatic transmission V6 and I have 33" tires (255/85r16) and have been using 4.88 gears for nearly 3 years and haven't regretted it one bit. At 70mph, my engine is spinning at ~2,750 rpms. My though process was if I was going to regear from 4.10s, might as well "go big" to 4.88s rather than a half-measure (4.56s).

If you're going with a 6" lift, I highly doubt you'll be staying with a 33" tire for long -- most likely, you'll want to step up to 35s. Would suck to gear to 4.56 and then find out you really want 35s and then need to re-re-gear to 4.88s. :)

    Just my $0.02

Yeah I'd go 4.88 or 5.29 with that setup

Right now the tires I have are 34's so I'm trying to stay at would essentially be a stock gear. I think y'all are right about the 4.88. The reason a say I'll stay at a 33 or 34 is because my wheels are 12" wide with a -44 off set and 4.25 back space so a 35 will rub bad with the wheel.

Selling my 96 Tacoma to fund the FJ80 build up.
With my 6" lift & 4.88's, also 90% street truck (3.4L V-6 Auto) I can set the cruise on 70 and it does not down shift or hunt in and out of gear. My speed is about 10% slower than speedometer. With my 33x12.50-15 mud claws 4.88s are about perfect for hwy loaded and or mild towing. I could run 35 mud radials and be OK gearing wise, but the performance / take off / holding gear uphill in a head wind would be compromised with 35's.

    I'll suggest the 4.88's

because 5.29's will have a smaller pinion gear
and is generally a weaker R&P set up.

    IMO strength is more critical.

I'm building the truck now. They really went overboard on some of the brackets for the fab tech 6". I'm putting a supercharger also. I actually have a 34" tire so I'm gonna see how it rides. I live in an area that there is literally no elevation other than bridges. I doubt I'll ever go to a 35 if anything I'll go to a 33. Thabks for the input. I'll probably go with a 4.56 now that I'm putting the supercharger. There is so much to do to these trucks it's frustrating.

Fabtechs are junk. Get a smaller lift with no drop bracket

As far as gears, 4.56 should be fine even for 35s. I know a guy who kept it 4.10s on 35s and it was still a great truck. Ive got 4.56 on 31s and it's a little over geared. I think 4.88s would be a bit over geared even on 35s

Well it's a little late. I'm already all the way in on the lift. It's gonna be a pavement truck anyway. I saved all the pieces to the frame and stuff In case I decide to go back. I wanted a 6" lift. No one else offers anything really in a straight 6" lift. I surely was not gonna put a body lift. We shall see how it goes in the next few days. I'm gonna drive it with out the SC then with it and go from there.

31's are purdy small for 4.56 gears

    nope

...not my fault you got less horsepower !? Lol

    I'd have gotten 4.88's and run up to 285's (33") on a 2.7L

You could likely still do up to 285's (33") with the 2.7L & 4.56's
But I'd rather have the 4.88's with that combo.

    I'd even think of going 5.29's with a 2.7L...
but the 4.88's are a stronger R&P set up.
And so... would probably stick with 4.88's

I'd never run 5.29s unless I had over 35s lol. The 4.56s are even a little much with the 31s. It's gonna get a supercharger and 33s

Youre really gunna want at least 4.88!! Youll notice hardly any difference going with 4.56 and it'll piss you off cause you spent so much money on it.

I say 4.88 minimum with that tire size and the auto tranny. A buddy of mine had a truck with a similar set up...Fabtech 6", 33's, V6 D-Cab, Auto and he ran 5.29's and loved the set up. From what I've read, most that run 33's with a V6 5spd go to 4.56 and with an auto go 4.88. If you're going to 34's, maybe 35's, definitely go 4.88 at least.

His factory tires are 32s with 4.10. I'd say 4.56 is gonna be pretty close to factory with 33s. If you get 35s, I'd say 4.88 would be necessary

    I realize
and would assume those 4.56's are the factory installed gearing...
    or someone installed those later.

But if they were taller then 4.56 originally...
    say 4.10's or taller.
    I would've swapped to 4.88's

    'cause for off road use...
    I wouldn't run shorter then a 33" tire
and having higher torque capabilities is always better IMO.

Regardless 4.56 should be acceptable for up to 33" tires.
Tho' I doubt I'd push that tire size up from there.

Didn't some come with 4.30s? Or was that the manual 4cyl?

    factory are 31's :)

since he's a street queen probably be safe with whichever, otherwise you're right about the off road. aired down he could probably float the sand with the wide rims. low gear it anyway to hear S/C whine? :p
