Looking at selling my current 2.7L 5MT PreRunner Tacoma in favor of a gen 3.

While I love it, it's showing its age to some degree. Also is like to have the new creature comforts my 2nd Gen lacks and have 4x4.

Yes, my truck is paid off, so I have at least $10k in equity.

Possibly considering an Auto for the first time in my life, but drawn to the low purchase price of a SR AC 5MT 4x4.

Fuelly is showing that MPG on average are better in a 2.7L even though, EPA sticker says otherwise.mammoth2-01.jpg

Also considering a TRD OR 4x4 DCSB 6MT, just hate the idea of a 5ft bed you have to really configure in order to sleep in.

Wife says, get what you want, but how are we ever going to have kids with that truck down the road...

I love the 6ft bed (truck camping in wilderness)and manual transmission, because they are a blast to drive.

I'd like to hear some opinions. Thanks.

I have the 5 ft bed in my '11. The 6 ft bed option is the reason I'm ordering a 17 TRD OR 4x4 LB. I sleep in the bed a lot and I'm 6'2" so I am cramped with the 5.Will still have to drop tailgate but I will also have more room for all my camping junk.
I have 6speed MT in the 911 but it is more a toy than a daily driver. I had stop and go from San Antonio to New Braunfels once in the 911 and was about ready to give the car away after that fiasco. Automatic only for daily driver.

If it's paid off, I'm assuming you have quite a bit more than 10k in equity in it and depreciation is going to be very slow. I'd ride it out, personally. Let the bugs get worked out and don't buy a vehicle for family needs until there's a family need.

I say if you have the means and you want the creature comforts of the 3rd gen.... I say go for it. The new tech in these 3rd gen trucks is great. You only live once. I bought a 2016 DCLB and have not had a problem with mine. Awesome truck!

Unless you have specific needs for 4x4 that you can't currently meet in your Prerunner I would keep it a cpl more years at least. JMO

I am trading in my 09 access cab for a double cab, because my almost 13 year old son is getting to tall to sit in the small space back there. I would say if you don't have kids yet, an access cab will be fine for many years. And if you like the manual trans, get one this time as they are getting harder and harder to find, let alone buy.

And besides what you have read on the internet (here) what else do you have to support this unreliable statement? On forums you will have a far larger number of people complaining about the issues, NOT EVERY truck has these issues.

Agreed. I've only talked to two locals with '17's and neither have had an issue. Both loved their trucks.

... and be one of the problem posters about your 3rd gen while it is at the dealer attempting to be repaired.

And again, besides what you have read here, where is the proof that he will have issues?

The issues are quite overblown...The majority of common issues are annoyances at worst (diff howling, transmission shifting/flares, NVH complaints) with less common issues getting resolved (CPS sensor, Cam shaft oil leak, transfer case woes)

I've gone through more than a few first model year issues with other vehicles, and lemme tell you, this is small potatoes.

Since I've got you here -- I'm looking at your same setup. Any regrets not having ATRAC/locker? Any of the rear diff issues that others are complaining about? Sorta waffling between DCOR (for those things) or the AC Sport (I prefer AC aesthetically).

    Thank you.

ADD ANOTHER 46 to the compliant numbers, hmmm you know that just might be the tipping point. Guess I should cancel my order and keep my family stuffed in to a small truck, that would be way better than the new one that must suck after reading on the Internet.

Nope sold that to help pay for my internet bill so I would know how bad the truck I want sucks. Actually just sold it last week, to keep the dealer from making more money off me.

When I first picked up my 05, everyone warned me that it wasn't going to be as good as the 1st Gen which were labeled as bullet proof. 11 years and yet to have anything other than routine maintenance done. It's now building a reputation as one of the most reliable vehicles ever made. A few little things here or there but honestly, from what I've seen, Toyota has backed these things up pretty good. I would feel very comfortable buying a 3rd gen.
