I read the thread title, and my first thought was, "Why?" Keep the 15 I say

Eh.. his debt to income ratio would grow exponentially since available credit (not just utilized credit) goes into that equation, and would then hurt his credit score and his ability to get financing on a large purchase (like a home).

In any event, seems like he's living on the edge of his means - not faulting him for that, that's the new normal. My advice had nothing to do with 2015 vs 2017, and everything to do with been there, done that, learn from my mistakes before you make your own again (or still, in his case either sounds like it applies).

No problem with him selling the '15 for a '17, but I'd just as soon suggest he sit on the current truck for 2 years and make his payments on time to lower his principal balance and build credit history on his own legs (and ideally, save cash, including a separate fund for a down payment on the next vehicle) and then upgrade. I have a hard time morally justifying giving any other advice except to not potentially ruin his financial picture (that he has painted in this thread, not anybody else) for the sake of marginally greener grass, and only potentially so.

Thats not the way it was explained to me, granted this was almost 10 years ago. I have a bunch of credit accounts, don't even think I have a current credit card for some, and I seem to be doing great with my credit score, except I just lost 9 points because we paid off my wife's car and the account is now closed.

I could be mistaken, but I have edited a book on the mysteries of credit ratings and bought a home in Dec 2014, so I am fairly confident.

    I love you either way.

My cousin has a 2015 SR5 4x4 DCSB. It has 34k miles now. He drove it to fishing/camping and so there some body scratches and the bed is very beat up; tires are almost bald.
We were surprised when the dealer offered him $28.5k for trade in value on his truck. He is getting a 2017 SR5 4x4 DCLB included tow package for slightly under 33k.

Looks like you have a '15 DCSB 2WD, I would say you're not going to get anywhere near 30K trade in.

    Keep the current truck.

Good advice. Even better, live below your means and invest the difference.

I don't think its the "new normal." In N America it has been normal for a long long time...sadly
