They just need to keep in mind that it's not just about swapping out shackles and yay, I got more droop with no subsequent consequences. I've also seen many people talk about how it gets rid of those big stock shackle hangers and now they don't have to worry about getting hung up on them. I have NEVER been hung up on a shackle hanger before. I'm not really sure what you would have to do to make that happen. Same people that worry so much about a gas tank skid, front diff drop, rear diff breather, snorkel for driving through hood high water, open diffs are fine because I already follow the big trucks all the time, I can't fit 35s without building a tube front end, chrome looks good, dick tastes good and my 16 year old daughter isn't sucking off every guy willing to skip 3rd period and hide under the gym bleachers with her. Those people are the ones who none of my posts will ever save. Good luck to your friends .....

It has to happen organically. You can't force chemistry.

While I was in my senior year @ Purdue, I fell into a co-op program that also put me on the payroll at Honda, and going after my masters in mechanical engineering at Rose Hulman Institute. Honda funded a program where we did research on suspension linkage used on the rear end of their dirt bikes. It eventually went into production in the mid 80's through the mid 90's. The multi-link suspension had a lot in common with the ratio's used in tuning a leaf suspension via shackle length/angle. We also had data supplied by General Motors on suspension design intended for use on school bus chassis. Long story short, they used a 45 degree baseline for shackle/linkage angle, then altered that to "tune" the suspension to achieve desired results. Also, that angle wasn't measured from the flat plane drawn from front wheel to rear wheel center, but instead, on a plane from center of two pivot points of the leaf spring (bolts ) . In almost all cases, the front pivot would be slightly below the rear pivot. By altering the angle of that plane, the angle of the shackle would be reduced 2 to 2-1/2 degrees per every 1 degree of the front/rear pivot differential. And if that doesn't complicate things enough, the shackle angle would be calculated to be at it's optimal angle with 75% of rated payload in the vehicle at normal position(s) (ie passengers in seats/load in trunk/bed. etc....) Lengthening shackles on a standard leaf spring suspension would effect the plain used to measure correct linkage angle. ie.....longer shackles threw everything out of kilter.

Honda foot the bill for all my post grad work. I was committed to work for them for 6 years after I received my degree. That ended up as being a suspension tech for their off road racing program.

As a habit developed in those days, anything that I comment on strictly as a casual observation, rather than a data driven set of scientific facts I regard as anecdotal and NOT based on hard science.

I use a term for when people do "back yard modifications" to any well engineered design....I call it "accidental engineering". In many cases, there's enough of a margin for error, these shot in the dark changes will still work well enough that the average end user won't see enough difference to KNOW the difference.

When push comes to shove, I don't like taking wide swings at re-inventing the wheel....Changing well thought out designs brings with it an opportunity to learn, but it also CAN cause issues that go far beyond the average person's pay grade. A simple thing like spring shackles has a far greater effect than what meets the eye.

    It's an engineer thing.....

I was being a bit facetious. $2k for wheels and tires just blows my mind. I'm old though. I can remember when you could buy tires for $70 a piece.
