Gotcha. Just wondering as I like the idea of a short barrel build but have no use for a pistol. I thought that setup may skirt the law or use a loophole. Nice setup.

Anyone have any thoughts on .300 blackout? Not trying to get into a ballistics debate but just generally how does the round handle in the AR platform and has the $/round come down any? I was looking at bulkammo.com and it seemed under like around .60 cents/round.

Reason I ask is that I am considering getting a SBR, possibly in .300 with the idea to suppress it down the road.

I dont shoot that often, or at least not as often as I would like, but Im never looking at anything +100 yards with my current AR.

300 is a fine caliber but I wish I would have stayed out of it. I built a bolt action before they were available off the shelf, and I have an SBR as well. Both are neat, but I'd grab my 5.56 AR first if it were ever needed, and I have lots better rifles to hunt with. It's a very niche caliber and I think most would be better off sticking to something more mainstream.

Plinking with a can or just a general "go to war" with a can for the 300blk?
If it's just plinking I would go with a SBR 9mm AR and a can with a 3 lug interface.

Cheaper to shoot and still quiet.

If you ever want to hunt or step out to 200+ yards I would build a 16" 6.8, 12.5" 6.8 if you want to keep it short, or 20" 6.5 Grendel.

I dont hunt so thats not an issue. Eventually Id like a M1A for longer distance. I go to the range hopefully 1x month, it doesn't always work out though. Just looking for a general purpose, fun/plinking/homedefense/SHTF weapon. The .300 was interesting. I go back and forth between a SBR either 300 or 556, or a 14.7 pinned. I can be lazy so Im not sure doing the tax stamp is worth the effort sometimes and I know I won't be able to shoot as often as I like. 556 is just so dirt cheap, so its a bit of a dilemma.

    Do it all...eventually :)

    Register a lower now.
Buy a suppressor now. (if you can)
Make it a pistol and add a brace that you like, KAK, Sig etc etc.
Buy a short upper you like. I'd suggest starting with a .223.
    Shoot it.

Once tax stamp or stamps comes back convert to SBR, add suppressor.
    Shoot it some more.
Buy a .300 upper if you want.
    Shoot it.

Repeat with a 9mm, etc etc.

Go 556, if you're looking for home defense get a stripped lower and build it as a pistol and get something like this upper. http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-7-nitride-5-56-1-7-keymod-upper-with-bcg-or-charging-handle.html

Put a red dot, sling mount (or mounts), and light on it and i guarantee it'll be your go to gun, you'll have to be a little more selective on cans (Not a bunch of Manufacturers offer warranty with a 7.5" barrel) but I would go with something like a griffin alpha or recce 7 mod 3.

With the A2 flash hider the concussion is a bitch but get something like the noveske KX3 and it should help.

    This is my version (SBR'd)

And how it hangs over the bed. (This pic has my 11.5" upper on it, but it's the same idea)

    This is spot on.
It's worth the $200 investment to start the form 1 for a SBR AR lower, you're not limited to caliber (As long as it works with the AR-15 platform).

Thanks! I was looking at 10.5 or 11.5 if I SBR. DD has a complete 10.3 .300 I was interested in. Could also get 556 in it as well. What really got me on reading about 300 was suppressing and hearing protection. My family has a history of bad hearing and I already have tinnitus.

I currently have a 16" LWRC upper on a Spikes Lower and its fine.

Suppressed 556 with ear pro will be plenty safe, while not super quiet most of the muzzle blast is dissipated.
IMO the 300 bulk is only worth it as a "fun gun" or if you absolutely need something to be extremely quiet for some reason.

For shooting a SBR 556 without a can I would double up on ear pro, hell even a 16" 556 I want double ear pro.

I have tinnitus already as well but I believe it's from running heavy equipment without ear pro when I was younger, now whenever I jump on the Dozer or Backhoe I'll grab ear pro and if I'm doing a bush hogging job I'll grab some soft earbuds and a set of muffs so i can listen to music and block out some noise.

While I really love my 10.5 sbr and my 9mm pistol AR. And I don't regret getting them. If I could only grab one rifle out of my safe on the way out I'd choose the 14.5 Noveske every time. I have so much more control with that gun than any shorter setup. I've come to realize too that indoors I'd rather just sling the rifle, use a suppressed pistol and have a free hand available.

300blk has plenty of legit uses. It just went mainstream to people for being quiet while suppressed and turned into a "fun gun". But I know quite a few people who use it for a ranch gun type deal. Killing coyotes and raccoons at night while being quiet is a blessing. Also know a few guys who use it for prairie dogs and regular coyote hunting too. Quiet suppressed for when they are close. Switch to supersonic when it's further away.

Whether suppressed or not I wear ear pro 90% of the time. Only gun I don't is the 22s. Mind you just single ear pro when suppressed. Hearing is the one thi g that once gone it's gone so why expose yourself to loud noise when you don't need too. Then again I'm probably unique that I wear ear muffs mowing the grass, drilling, cutting, welding, ect

I have 5 and no serious issues. Two minor things I noticed when machining them out though- shouldn't affect performance, but worth noting. First: The mag catch opening (left side) is machined slightly too large and there is a small gap about 1/16" towards the front of the mag catch once installed where you can see through to the magazine. No issues inserting or releasing a magazine though. The second issue I noticed (and this only happened to one of my lowers) is that when milling out the main pocket, the front of the area you are milling gets a little too close to the spring hole for the bolt catch. On the one lower in question, the machining process exposed the spring pocket and the spring is visible. Checked the other ones I milled and they are intact, but it makes me very aware of it when I machine a new one. Again, I have not had issues with it and everything lines up and it all works as it should. More than likely operator error, but I used the same jig and tooling for all of them so it caught me by surprise.

Their ar10 lowers are amazing and the only thing I noticed there was that they use a threaded roll pin for the bolt catch so you might have to order those separate. Got mine from Aero for $2.50, but shipping the damned things costs too much unless you go over their free shipping threshold.

good to know! i was the only one in the group to get an ar10 lower so i am excited to build this thing!! and for the ar15 lowers we are horeing out a modulas arms hd jig and that thing is beefy so we will see what it looks like on the 11th lower and report back!

My advise would be to "test cut" the first ar15 and check all your tolerances in the areas I mentioned and fully assemble before you go and cut the rest. It'll give you a good idea of what quality the lowers are. The magwells are slightly flared on both as well and I had to clearance my jig with a dremel for the AR10 to fit properly.
