Aren't Duratracs still the default choice for snow apart from a dedicated winter tire? That is what I'm planning to get next, but also open to suggestions.

I recently got Duratracs on my 4runner and have been driving them in the snow the last week or two. They have a lot of traction to get moving, can't speaking for braking and edge hold yet.

I bought a set of Cooper Discoverer A/TW's from Crappy Tire (they are the only place that carry them in Canada). They go on sale often - between 15 - 25% off depending on the week. I got mine for about $162 per tire (not including fees, tax, install etc) for my size.

I put them on last year for use as an off road and snow tire (winter rated) and for me they are excellent on snow and ice (loads better than the stock Dunlops). Hard to compare but I had Blizzacks on my old Honda Accord and they seemed on par with their effect (again - very subjective comparison as that's a front wheel drive car vs a truck).

They are on Consumer Reports as being in the top 5 for light truck tires.

On ice, the only thing I find that is truly effective is a winter tire with studs.

    Just my 2 cents.

Those Coopers look pretty Skookum for an all rounder. I don't plan on running winters, and am on the fence on whether I'll replace the factories right off the hop. I'll likely run the goodyears and see how they go. I do go off road to get to my cabin, and hunting, snowmobiling. That's just fun time though, and I don't want a dedicated mud tire like I ran last. It was nice having my car to do my daily with, and the truck for play. I ran Nokian MT's on my truck, awesome off road performance, and still good on ice, but wore quite quick(soft I guess). I would go mad listening to them now all the time, as I will only have the Tacoma for all my driving.

I like the idea of removing the aluminum wheels for the winter onslaught of salt and calcium chloride... They will look way better next summer if I don't subject them to that crap.... So my steel wheels looks like shit all winter with rusted nuts...(most grumpy old men know what I mean)... hehehhe

It's just a yearly job to scrape/prime/paint the steelies each spring... takes a few hrs of time and a few beers..!
My nuts are 11 yrs old and I need new ones... do the Black chrome ones last longer than the normal chrome ones... anyone know..??

Will Powdercoat outlast paint..?? Lots of sand/gravel hitting them all winter..!

I've only re-painted the wheels 2 times in 11 yrs, but my nuts are real bad...

Check Kijiji (or another online classifieds app). I know I own a 2nd gen, and winter is approaching so time is of the essence, but I found a full set of OEM Toyota 16" aluminum wheels for $420 with tires in Calgary. The tires were still in great shape (too wide for my truck) so I sold a full set for $250 (I got 25 people asking to sell them so I had to shut down the ad). The rims were in better shape then the ones on my truck. I just put my winter tires on those.

powdercoat is very very strong. My brakes are powdercoated on my race car because brake dust wont eat through it like paint will. Powdercoat also won't fade

Ouch... I know how you feel; I waited 6 months for this one.

It's not lifted, yet. Icon Stage 4 en route, should be here in 10 days or so.

    Thanks, done!

Surprised to hear the long wait? Mine was serial numbered almost after the order, supposed to finish production end of the month, and arrive 4-5 weeks after so early December. Are they shipping these via rail or around panama by boat?

No, the wait was due to waiting for the 2017's. I ordered as soon as I could and it was on the first load dropped at the dealership.
