Hey everyone. I've been thinking about changing my own oil instead of using the free Toyota care. Is it worth it to do it yourself? Also, what weight/brand should I use?

Damned it man, this thread isn't about doing your own oil change. ;)

Of course it is worth doing it yourself. Choose an oil of the weight your owners manual and oil filler cap says.

Ok everyone, I just went out and changed my own oil. I totally get where you guys are coming from. I mean the satisfaction of doing a job that stoner meth heads get paid to do is AWESOME!

I am lucky enough to have a drain that goes straight to a lake where baby harp seals live. I now realize all of the blessings that I have missed from paying someone to do this. Although, they usually thank me for the privilege of changing my oil.

Speaking of which, if any of you want to come change my oil. I will let you do it for $5 and of course you can provide the filter and oil. Don't worry about disposal, me and the harp seals have something worked out.

I get it, you love your Tacomas and trust no one to change your oil. I really like my truck and get free services, which usually go pretty smoothly. Sometimes shit happens, I could get a new engine and get smoked by a drunk driver.

It's a short life and you gotta decide where you want to spend your time and energy. No free lunches, just free oil changes for the first 25,000.

I hope this doesn't upset anyone, trying to provide some levity. Have a good night and go do something you enjoy. I need to go tell the harp seals to quit bitching about the shitty oil Toyota put in my truck. They would really prefer a synthetic but that shit is expensive.

That'll teach you to ask for advice/ help here.

Hope you get compensation equal to any potential damage. I pay to have my wife's crv oil changed (GASP) because I don't want to do it.

Just got off the phone with the service manager and the head mechanic. Going to bring the truck in on nov 1st and they are going to drain the oil and cut the filter looking for brass shavings. Also, going to do a compression test and a leak down test on each cylinder to check the rings. Finally, they are going to take a borescope and look from both sides for scoring or any damage. They were very apologetic and owned their mistake, promised everything would be documented and that they would make it right.
I will talk to them about refunding my extended warranty and having them give me a new warranty for the life of the motor. If they end up not changing out the short block. Also going to have them rebalance my tires, and make sure they use the haweka device. Thanks Jared

    all tore up already
id certainly have them lab test the used oil sample at 250 mi by independent lab like blackstone, citgo etc. anything even the slightest out of normal and id be demanding a new motor. thats a big mistake to make and frankly shouldnt be possible since im sure an oil level light came on instantly on startup

the pieces of metal would have to be fairly significant to be able to see them on an oil filter.

Again..... None of those tests will tell you if the bearings were damaged. ONLY engine disassembly will do that. They have a firm grip on your wad and are jerking you around and you are just smiling. Not good.

If there was bearing damage, the inspecting the metallic glimer during the immediately following (and subsequently next few) oil change will be evidence enough. Teeny tiny gliter will be all over the drain container and any where else the oil goes.

Including, the filter on each head. The oil gallies next to the cam buckets, well shit....Everywhere. Those are just the two easiest spots to get to, after the oil filter and draining.

They are just blowing smoke up your skirt man. Tossing out a bunch of mechanic jargon. None of those test are going to find out if the cam bearings or rings have damage from going dry. Engines cannot go through what yours did without at least some damage that may not be showing now but will with time.

They owe you a new engine with a standard warranty on the new engine. Period, as in there's nothing else to even talk about.

Tell them to knock off the BS give you a new motor and lifetime power train warranty and be done with it!

Drain the oil through a cone type filter to catch all debris....

idk if i agree, i have certainly seen metal shavings, but when the eccentric shaft bearings were going in my rx8, UOA lab test was the only indication. next track day it came apart. no indication based on oil, filter or pan(well until after it blew). and i was very meticulous about oil in that car.
