Has anyone ever considered taking a utility bed off of an old utility truck and just modifying that to make an off-road trailer? seems like maybe less work and cheaper than going and buying an off-road trailer? Maybe I am wrong this has been tried and sucks to do?

I am finding all kinds of utility beds for cheap....I cant imagine that it would be that expensive to convert one maybe. I wish I had welding skills to try this.

Just FYI i saw the most redneck truck topper in town the other day. It was exactly what you guys are talking about. Some guy with an older dodge had gotten an identical bed and turned it upside down to use as a topper. If i can find the pic i took I'll post it. It was awesome and horrifying all at the same time

This is nothing like what I am talking about. I meant taking a bed from a utility truck and making a trailer out of it....not flipping a bed of a truck and making a shell out of it.

Hmmm.. I wonder what an average box weighs? Weld up a frame, axle, wheels and tires.. you'll have it! Could be cool but I bet it would get heavy?

I'm not sure how you would mount the axle and tires to the utility bed. Those sit on the truck frame that has the axle and wheels mounted to it. You would have to cut the truck frame, and when weld a hitch to the frame, making it pretty cost prohibitive I would think, since you would have to scrap the rest of the truck. Plus it would be pretty heavy.

you make a frame with the axle and suspension, then bolt the box to it just like its bolted to a truck frame. very much the same. i cant imagine weight being much of an issue if you find the right size bed. you can always mod it by replacing steel doors with aluminum.
