Just wondering as I haven't test driven in snow or mud, or off road in general only pavement. Haven't ordered just yet will be in a few weeks. But just wondering, how are the 3rd gens?

I know obviously on dry pavement don't do a full lock turn in 4x4 but how is it otherwise?
Mainly asking because I've driven other 4x4 that would bind really easy. Don't want to cause any damage to the truck turning.

Main consideration is because of my driveway and grandmother's driveway are steep and in the winter could be hard to get up, would probably work best in 4x4 but previous vehicles would bind even with snow covered roads.

Unless your doing circles in 4x4 not stop you'll be fine. I see guys driving there trucks around in 4x4 in dry pavement all the time in nice weather. Had a guy 3 weeks ago rubbing his super duty in 4x4. It'll be fine

    good to know.
I just remember with my uncles silverado 2500 having a hard time with it in 4x4 and turning.
same with the ram he had.

If the wheel is turned 90% then you will. Just normal straight driving you're fine. If you just using it to get up a driveway there won't be any problems at all

well I'd likely have it on while turning into the driveway, would be close to a full lock for a second then start straightening out.
I just thought of it because I was at my grandmothers and her house is on a hill and her driveway is a steep incline as well. It can be very difficult just to get up the hill.

More so a concern for leaving as you need to back out then drive up the hill and in the winter it can be tough.

Don't use 4x4 in dry conditions... you will put a lot of strain on your drive system. When you get to granny's house.. point your truck up toward the driveway and hill and then hit the 4x4 button.. give 'er shit man... Granny will be happy that you made it during a snowstorm, again and again...!!!
PS... Don't hurt poor Granny....let little Red Riding Hood bring her dinner....

    Don't be "that" wolf..... hehehe

Hey...when is your truck coming in..?

talked to the dealer they will have my test drive next weekend then placing my order :D
Should be here around mid to end january.

I know not to in dry conditions. I was just concerned with snowy conditions. I've had other 4x4 bind even when the roads are covered in snow. Always figured its fine to turn in 4x4 if the conditions are shit, but the older trucks I was driving still would bind. Without 4x4 couldn't do it as you slipped too much but with 4x4 it would bind.

Snow will be fine as long the wheels can slip.

    Congrats on the new truck.

Yeah, If I have to make a real tight turn in snow or whatever... Ill release the 4X4 and turn it around... then go 4X4 again... tight turns are not nice while in 4X4...

As long as its NOT dry pavement you will have plenty of slip for the tires and no bind. It wont bind on anything cept dry pavement. Full lock it tough on any 4x4. I'd do the tight turn then put it in 4x4 as mentioned...

my concern is more for the hill my grandparents live on. city takes forever to plow so its usually snow covered. I'd be turning in the snow, could turn off 4x4 once on the driveway probably since its usually shoveled. My grandparents are old stubborn italians lol. Even though they are 87 and 93 they refuse to let anyone in our family help them, so driveway is shoveled.

I guess best way to figure it out is just give it a try and if it binds I know don't ever do it again lol.
But glad to know they don't bind easily on slippery conditions.

When you get a chance, snag a pic of the driveway next time you're there so we can see what you're up against.

Btw, I'm a little jealous of your TDI. We got a 2011 Jetta SE for the wife a few years back. Fantastic car, love everything about it, but just wish we could've gotten the TDI version.

    heres from google maps.
Doesn't really do justice for how steep it actually is. You can kind of tell from the difference in the two houses side by side on how steep the hill is.
and then the driveway compared to the other driveway right beside it.

Ok, that makes more sense. I would think that if you make a fairly wide turn into the driveway, you shouldn't have an issue. Otherwise, do a wannabe-3-point-turn.
