Could be a ton of things... Check that light and we go from there. Not unheard of. What were the symptoms as it was dying? Stumbling or anything?

Dont know your problem, but the oil light will come on if the engine shuts down. So another words, the oil light probably doesnt mean anything to your specific issue, it was a result of the issue.

After alt failure the vehicle will run on battery until the battery is dead. He has power and it cranks.

OP, everything is guesswork until you get the code(s) pulled. I'm sure you aren't passing out prizes for the correct guess. Are you?

Even if someone guesses right, you aren't going to go start repairs based w/o having the code(s) read, correct?

So don't make yourself nuts with shots in the dark. Wait till you have actual info.

Where this site can be more helpful is guidance on how to solve/repair some issues associated with the code(s).

And as I always asked my kids, 'is it out of gas?' ;)

Not sure about the Tacoma setup, but I just replaced the FLS in my fiancee's Trailblazer for $38 with an OEM part.

Took a weekend to put it in, but.. I digress.

Seriously, If your gas gauge isn't reliable, pay attention to your trip odometer.
