All true, and thanks for that :fingerscrossed:

Either way, I will surely update the masses on the outcome.

Sounds have a habit of transferring through components, gears, cases, body parts, etc., and when you think you have located the correct component causing the noise you cannot completely rule out the possibility it's something else.

I've dealt with chain drive primaries in 1970's vintage import motorcycles and Harleys and they can make some weird noises. The chain inside your transfer case may possibly be riding up on the gears/sprockets when the driver manipulates the throttle at the right vehicle speed. That is merely a S.W.A.G.

On the invoice it says 8hrs labour to get the T-case swapped out. I thought that was a bit excessive until I had another look under the truck and realized it's bolted directly to the ass end of the transmission. It looks like they'll have to come out together and then be yanked apart..

Any techs on here that can verify this for a 3rd gen Tacoma?

Today I spoke with the advisor that I always work with about the tranny (more on that in the TSB post). I'll be bringing my truck in for the software update on Saturday, but I also asked him about the rear-diff howl. Apparently they've had a field tech out to check on the gearing of the new set-up. At this point it's "normal" due to the new gears and how they are cut. There's been no report of mechanical compromise (at least in Bend, OR). It sounded like nearly every Tacoma has it, and that people are making complaints, just like regarding the transmission.

I'll ask for some more detail on Saturday, but he was up front with me regarding the issue and didn't try to down-play that something definitely "sounds" off.

I hope the complaints are building up! By the time we get a fix I will be so used to the noise that the silence will drive me nuts!

I was just given a 5 year / 75,000 mile Toyota Care Plus package. I get all minor and major scheduled maintenance for 5 years or 75,000 miles

If that is truly the case and the noise does not get a lot louder as our Tacoma's rack up the miles, I can live with it.

I am fortunate that the Toyota dealership where I purchased my Tacoma offers a lifetime drivetrain warranty to the original owner.

They must be changing their game around a bit, that is the first I've heard of a Toyota Care Plus package being given out. Nice. Does that cover diff/transmission fluid changes as well, with all the "special operating condition" recommended intervals being met too?? If so thats awesome, I'd be going in every 5k miles telling them I tow heavy loads/drive on dirt roads every day!!

    lifetime is what to them?
Mitsubishi had the same thing lifetime warranty (which they later explained was lifetime of the vehicle) which to the was only 10 years.

I assume it will be whatever is in the book, so they will rotate tires every 5k and change oil at 30k, 40k, 50k, 60k, 70k. I don't know what major recommended maintenance is in the book. That should be covered.

I would have preferred an extended warranty, but they wouldn't give it to me. They offered this because of my inconvenience of the truck spending several weekends at the dealership

These are the third party 'warranties' that you are given when the car is sold. They give you paperwork that says the manufacturers recommended maintenance must all be followed and completed and that they have the right to cancel your policy or deny your claims at any time. You have to get the repair work done and then you send them the bills to get reimbursed. Most people never get reimbursed

    it's a scam

I don't know, it "recommends" special maintenance if your daily conditions fit a certain criteria. I'd tell them it isn't your fault they offered you that knowing you primarily use your TRD Off Road vehicle for Off Road/camping activities as advertised.

That is interesting. I think the paperwork will say 'special' maintenance will not be covered.

In what way? I paid nothing for it. It is in effect after the factory warranty expires. The dealership does it locally and I don't have to fill out any paperwork.

I was told that if the engine blows up in ten years at 300,000 miles, they will repair or replace it. If any part of the drivetrain needs repair or replacement, I drop off the truck at the dealership and pick it up when they are finished. Of course this does not apply if I crash the truck or fail to keep the fluids changed. If they see a video of me making river crossings with water over the hood or getting airtime jumping over boulders, I expect they would have a good case to dispute a repair.

For someone like me who does not go off road much and trades vehicles every six to eight years, it is minimal risk for the dealership.

    I'll edit this...

I'm sure you have that in writing. If it's through the dealership like you said it is, I assume it also says in that paperwork that you must have their service center perform all minor and major recommended maintenance. It will also say that they can refuse your claim or cancel your warranty at any time

We have been talking about these policies on here in the third gen forum for about a year. It's not new to us

The dealership has a reputation for honoring their warranty.
