I seem to be stuck in the '60s so 2 cents back then would be worth buck 2.98 considering it costs 93 cents to make a penny now! So all you guys, melt down those pennys and save that copper cuz it pays for a full tank of gas, lol.
Once again, I did ask about vibration problems and still no bulletins or any other word from toyota yet. As far as ticking goes, if its caused by the injectors which I beleive it is, I would think that if you didnt hear it, then there would be a problem.
I think someone should run a thread on diagnosing engine noises, both normal and not. I am gonna have to search for this at work cause I know I saw an article from Toyota on this and I will be damn if I can remember exactly where it was! I hate being senile!

 

My opinion - Toyota is starting to out grow their quality reputation. I'm not a very satisfied customer but know many that are.

My own experiences:
1) Owned a 98 Tacoma 4x4 V6 until this March. Had almost 120 k miles on the truck. While I had no problems until 95 k, had some problems from 95k to 120 k, rust being the terminal problem at 120 k. The frame was so rotten that the truck was deemed unsafe to drive. While I do live in Northeast Ohio with lots of salt, the truck was the first of 10 vehicles in my family that has rusted that badly. I washed the undercarriage at least once per month in the winter.
2) In March I negotiated with a Toyota dealer to get a fair trade-in on the truck (not quite what I should have gotten if it wasn't so rusted but enough that Toyota took a hit too - the truck went off to auction). I was also promised by Toyota $500 in loyalty cash if I bought a new truck. With this, I bought a 2007 Tacoma 4x4 Access cab 4x4 TRD V6.
3) I'm been fighting with a 20 mph vibration problem since owning the truck. The entire drive shaft was replaced which helped some. I will admit that I drove 3 other new trucks on the lot as part of the troubleshooting; one didn't have it and two did. This is something Toyota is letting off the production line.
4) I still haven't received my $500 loyalty check. When I called Toyota yesterday that indicated they lost my paperwork and had no record of what I sent. I had to refax the paperwork.

Sunruner19 - before you jump me too hard - we've had 4 trucks in the family, including a Dakota, S-10, and another Tacoma. Dad didn't help buy it and while I use the truck for towing and hauling (home repair stuff and hay/supplies for horses mostly), it doesn't get abused. Also, I agree these sites often bring out the worst (I'd never posted until I had problems).

The best maker of vehicles in my opinion - Subaru. My wife had a 81 GL for 15 years that we sold at 190k to a friend (someone we liked!). We have a 98 Outback with 187k that runs very well. No repairs yet other than wear and tear items. We have a 2004 WRX wagon with 20 k that is driven hard and hasn't blinked an eye. While they're ugly, they hold up and do well with AWD. If they made a truck that's what I'd buy.

Even with my experiences with my current Tacoma, the truck still has the best capabilites and best gas mileage in its class. If a friend test drove a Tacoma carefully and worked out a good deal price-wise, I wouldn't talk them out of the purchase - just warn them of what to watch for. That's what's really great about these forums...

 

I've had my truck for 2 years now and just rolled over the big 40k mile mark. I love my taco and drive it everywhere and anywhere. The biggest problem I've had was my leaf springs started squeaking around 30k and all I did was bought a can of silicone lubicant. Havn't heard a squeak since, some people reccomnded buying new ones, but why when they still work just as good when I first bought it.

 

For all vehicles made there are going to be a handful of lemons. Then you have some vehicles which everyone knows the majority of them are lemons (like my POC 04 Titan). Every forum is going to have folks that have had trouble with their vehicle. Since there are so many Toyota's on the road compared to smaller volume automakers like Landrover and Saab, you may be seeing differences in volume on the forums. I think the best way to get an idea of the reliability trend is to look at the consumer reports and JD Power reliability ratings. Toyota's are consistently high (and BTW, most of the Nissan vehicles including my beloved Titan'ic Lemon are amongst the worst in their categories - had to get that in there since I am still battling Nissan) I have an 07 Tacoma 1500 miles and no issues.

There are only 2 worth looking at the rest have some severe short commings!
The Frontier and Tacoma are the 2 on my list, I've owned both and in that class thier tops in my book!

 

Come on now, all you have to do is look at all the Toyotas still running down the road. I live in Arizona, and see a frightening number of older Toyotas being towed to Mexico by none other than another Toyota. The reason? They are buying as many as they can (mostly from California) because they know the value and reliability of the Toyotas. I hear they are taking them into deep southern Mexico because of the high call for them there. My 88 toy pu has 246,000 mi n still goin'. Look at all the commercials on tv copying Toyota's ad campaign for toughness. The titan's cheesy commercial with the train? Come on. And their "chrome package." Yeah, that's important. Ooooh, it looks all shiny on the back of that towtruck.

Well the Old Hardbody Small Nissan is pretty Dam TUFF Too! I've owned 2 of them.87 & 94. I sold my brotherinlaw the 94 with 89,000 now he's over 200.000 with it. I can't speak to the Titan comment I never owned one.

 

Buy the Toyota. I've had mine for 2 months. As hard as I've tried, I can't seem to isolate any of the problems some other people have posted. If I have a vibration, I can't tell. If it ticks, well too many years of shooting have reduced the hearing a bit.....I may have it, but wouldn't hear it. It rides different than my Passat I traded, but I knew it would....it's a truck. Zero regrets, other than the new found hauling options my wife has found....seems we do more yard work now that I own it.

BTW.....just came back from Scotland. Went to Loch Ness to see if I could witness the monster abusing the truck....no luck......not that it didn't happen........

 

I wasn't downing nissans (okay maybe a little). I've owned 'em since they were called Datsuns! I've put many miles on hardbodys as well. Not many complaints about those either. In fact, nissan would be my SECOND choice(frontier pups rate very well) if for some reason Toyota went out of business. I passed a few nissan dealers to get to the Toyota dealer where I purchased my truck, and in fact was being wooed by the Nissan salesman via the internet countless times. But I knew what I wanted and needed out of my truck. I'm a TacoLover!

 

my taco is now 66,000+ strong and so far knock on wood no issues so liam good choice on your taco yes it varies state to stateon what they offer as far as options. so you have alot of fun upgrading your taco i know i did

I may be up there with the most tedious of Toyota owners, I have owned many vehicles, and I can say without a doubt that the Tacoma 4.0 v6 and 4runner/tundra 4.7 v8 are the best motors made for trucks and suvs ... you take care of them, they will take care of you! Tacoma tick=Turn up the music ... it's a noisy motor deal with it ... I hate any unusual noise, drives me nuts ... but everything checks out... buy a clean taco, you'll be glad you did
