Along with rusty frames, thin paint has always plagued the Tacomas.

Not always rusty frames, just when they started calling them tacos.

It makes no difference, this mexico, texas plant stuff has to stop. 5 tacomas, all different plants all same thin paint, its a Toyota thing.

I beg to differ. My subaru painted FRS had chips all over it and it was a well known problem. EPA restrictions are cracking down on the paint chemicals they can use so it's getting thinner.
My Tacoma hasn't shown a single chip yet.

My wife has Barcelona Red on her 2014 runner. All it takes is a light bump with anything to leave a white scratch line. My understanding is it's the new environmentally friendly paint. It's the sole reason I chose white on the 2017 TRD OR I ordered. Did you guys see the blue one on here with the bush scratches?

You basically confirmed what I just said, what are you begging to differ? That it dosent have thin paint or that its not Toyota exclusive? I've owned 5 Tacomas, all different colors, all different plants, all with thin paint, point is this is not a new thing for these trucks, ask any other previous owners or look in 2nd gen section, etc. Yours may not have any chips yet, give it time. Agree though that paint is thinner due to EPA reasons but not new to tacomas.

Yah, this paint does chip easily. I have mudguards, and my rockers have plenty of little chips now. My touch up paint bottle is getting a workout. I even found one on the driver door, went right through the rock guard stuff on the rockers and lower door panels! Just going to check it often, keep it waxed and maybe get some 3m film to help protect it.

Look into a Langka blob eliminator kit. With the right technique and patience, you can fill in chips to nearly flush with the surrounding paint. If you follow it up with wet sanding and polish, it can look virtually indistinguishable from the rest of the paint.

I hit a small chip I had on my door's edge which was tougher to make level, but it came out great.

You are correct sir! I had a 91 ranger 4x4 and that little truck would not quit. I put 200,000 miles on it and it just kept on going. If or when Ford re-releases a ranger, I will take another look.

Blame water based paints. Tacomas are the only ones that have thin paint.

To OP, your complaint about toyota paint is not valid given you have rock chips. Defective paint is lifted from primer or paint and primer lifted from sheet metal. You show rock chips... if you want to protect the paint, get Xpel or 3M or other comparable paint protection film. The whole front clip should set you back about $1200 installed. It's considerably less if you can find a friend and do it yourself, but be prepared to get dust on the film or finger print marks... even pros can leave finger print marks... I had my BRZ done and the installer left a thumb mark on the back side of hand, but they denied they did it.

$7K for a whole car, because the shop figured he had a 911 he can afford to pay more. If they vinyl wrap the whole car where they take it apart, then $7K still a bit much, but can see why it cost more if they had to take the whole car apart.

No sealant or special paint can protect a rock from chipping the paint at 65MPH+. Don't follow big rigs carrying gravel. Car tires can kick up too... BRZ and low slung hoods will get more rock chips than trucks. Truck bumpers will get more damage because it's flat like a wall and big...so if you are strapped for cash, but you want to protect...PPF the bumper and hood.
