Interesting... I just dropped my 2016 TRDOR off to get my 6 Speed Automatic transmission replaced due to a shift flare from 3-4th gear. The dealer gave me a brand new 2016 Highlander with a 6cyl 6 Speed automatic as a loaner car. The new Highlander, I am driving, gave a 300-400 RPM shift flare when shifting from 3rd-4th gear. The temperature was about 65 degrees outside, and the engine was cold. When the engine warmed up, the flaring stopped. This transmission is another one of these reduced component, compact systems, like the new generation of Tacoma 6 speed autos.

Flare is pretty common with cold automatic transmissions. Google transmission flare on cold engine with Volvo, Nissan, GMC, BMW...... not only a Toyota thing

Really. I will have to check that out. I know a lot of Aisin transmissions are suffering with the flare. It is pretty easy to bandaid with engine management.

I can't believe you're having them do all that work on a transmission replacement for the flare, potentially causing unforseen future problems and/or performing imperfect work when I'd venture to guess all of these transmissions will flare under the right conditions until they work out the programming bugs.

It's not due to programming, it's due to valve seating. As the transmission fluid heats up and expands the valves seat better.

    Programming can't fix that.

I am driving a 2016. In the 2016, The engine is very similar. Different transmission but same technology generation. The 2017 ditched the 6 speed in favor of the 8 speed.

The transmission is being replaced because the hardware is faulty.

Yes. This is a problem. The common denominator is the Aisin transmission. They need to pull their heads from their backsides.

Every Toyota with a 6 speed auto does it, from my experience selling them dating back to 2008 and up, Camry, Tundra, Avalon, Sienna....you name it.....on that first drive of the day it does it.

The engine and trans were cold, that's probably why. I can't believe I'm defending a turd gen or a highlander. Gross. But seriously, a little common sense goes a long way

That will be interesting...the 4runner weighs more than the tacoma. It's definitely going to be getting it?

There are plenty of Toyotas with 250k miles on these transmissions, with the "3-4 flare" still happening every morning. I'm not saying it's right, but apparently doesn't prevent them from lasting a reasonable service life.
