Was driving back from the armpit of California (Fresno) and turned on my lights and noticed after about an hour that my driver side was out. Didn't notice it until I saw the reflection in the semi truck in front of me.

Went home and swapped the bulbs for the stock bulbs and still out. Checked fuses and all are good.

Headed to the dealer tomorrow for an oil change anyways.

    Smitty got any popcorn left?

If your fuses are good, then by definition there's no "short". It's an "open" circuit.

What aftermarket bulbs were you using?

As for it being a "3rd gen issue" that sort of depends on whether the aftermarket bulbs caused the problem or not, which it doesn't look like you've yet determined to be the case.

All I am being told is its an electrical issue they should have resolved tomorrow. Have to wait and see what the paperwork says.

Hopefully you made arrangements for them to look at it when you are in for the oil change or they may tell you that you have to make another appointment. When I took my truck in for the 5K service, I asked them to perform the transmission TSB update and they told me I would have to make another appointment for that. I told them to go fuck themselves and that that was just really poor customer service. They told me the first service would be 60 minutes. 95 minutes later they said it was ready, but it took them 10 minutes to bring it around for me. Needless to say, I was not happy and when they called to see how my visit was, I gave them an earful about customer service.

I replaced my stock low-beam headlight bulbs today with Silverstar Ultras. The stock bulbs are Osram (Sylvania), H11 standard, made in Germany, as are the Silverstar Ultras. Tacomas may be assembled in Mexico but the headlight bulbs are not made there.

Yes I know. I had a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe that would go through a set of Silverstar Ultras about every 18 months. I put a set in my wife's 2007 Mustang and they were still going strong when we traded it in 7 years later, and she turns the headlights on whenever she drives, day or night. I read a lot of reviews and comments about Silverstar (Ultra) lights.A good number of "short-life" reports but to some extent life-span seems to be vehicle dependent. They're warranted for one year, so if they fail I'll get a new set for free.

Well, then that's an open circuit... :)

Generally speaking, fuses should go before a wire melts in the event of a short. Though if someone puts in a higher-than-spec fuse it can lead to such a situation.

Except the problem occurred while his aftermarket lights were installed, so those Tacoma lights were sitting' pretty elsewhere.

    Reading is fun-damental.
