New brake pads. The indicators on the old ones have been squealing for several months; I just never get time to do it. Today I came home from work earlier and decided to do it. I actually forgot how easy these are since they just slide in from the front. All my other vehicles I have to remove the callippers.

Easy? I guess they could be if the caliper pins would come out. Both of mine were seized in. A few methods later, and all I wound up with was pins that had flattened heads that, even if they would finally come out, they couldn't :p
    So new calipers it was.

Question: Do you all use shims on the brake pads? Some say it is not needed and some say it is. My previous set had 2 shims on each pad. IMG_6597.jpg

I would have, but the pads I got (EBC greenstuff) had some sort of pseudo-shim built in and they explicitly say not to use shims with their pads. If the pads come with them, I would suggest using them.

Fortunately I am in Florida. Minimal rust. They came right out.

I cannot contain my envy for low-rust environments.

Fucking hell. That must have taken some serious force.

I ended up using the solid one. The perforated one came with the previous set (Wagner Thermoquiet) and specifically said it was for noise reduction. The new set (Bosch) did not come with any.

Well either way, I can't imagine a shim would cause any harm being there even if it's not needed. But for these types of things, I always research it beforehand, just in case.

The set came with a packet of grease, and the only place to use it is between the pads and shims, so I based my decision on that.

    Good thinking then.
I do think grease can be used on all contact points though. Not just where the pad meets the shim, but any spots where it sits against the caliper.

I'm leasing cars as long as I stay in the north east. Fuck dealing with shit rust welded together.

I'm largely against leasing vehicles, but the more I work on mine, the more I see the benefit in it. At least for a DD. But my overwhelming desire to...get to know my vehicles would probably stop. I couldn't imagine essentially borrowing a car for a while and getting rid of it. Seems so...normie.
