2008 deck plate mod????

Hey folks just bought an 08 tacoma 2.7L 5 speed regular cab and love it. i'm very interested in doing a deck plate mod on my truck like the ones i've seen here on the GEN 1 tacomas. from the pics of the mod on the forum it looks like the GEN 1 air box is flat and doesn't have that hump and indent in it like the newer ones. does anyone have any success stories for a Gen 2 deck plate mod?

what are my other options? are some aftermarket CAI still making the trucks lose horsepower?

I haven't done it myself. From the pics of the older deck plate mods it looks like the hole would be the same size as the stock intake tube to the fender so I'm not sure you'd gain anything. Not to mention you'd be sucking in hot air from the engine bay rather than colder air from the wheel well. What you might try is trimming the tube in the wheel well. I believe it has a domed partial cover on the end. Maybe cut that off?

There are many intakes out there, but all cost $200-400. Not sure the little HP gained is worth the price. Well, to me it isn't anyway.

 

So i'm going to have to come off like 250 bucks to see and gains? well damn it!!! anyone have any suggestions on a CAI that fits my tacoma?

 

TRD, URD, K&N, AEM..... There's quite a few... All over $200, most closer to $300, some more. Which is why I haven't bothered to get one.

 

Oh, yeah... Forgot that part... I don't know what's for the 4 banger, but at least with the company names maybe find something. With the prices they ask for them, I've never really done the research.

 

man i'm disappointed. i found the famous deck plate mod and was all set to go to the boat store. took a look in my hood (have only owned it a couple months) to find out i have the incompatible 08 2nd gen airbox.

so there's no other option for us? i wanted to feel the diff and hear what everyone was talking about.

 

I would (and did) just go with a drop in filter like the AFE. These stock intakes are already CAI's so, unless you want to get the URD, I wouldn't waste my time with any of them. I personally wouldn't get the URD, though it is dyno proven, because I don't like the idea of the filter out in front like that.

^That's it but no, I don't have it yet. I should've specified that. I'm just saying that, unlike other vehicles I've owned, the OEM system is already a CAI so I don't see that there would be a huge gain to be had with a new CAI so I'm just going with the drop in. Many others have seen good results with this filter. Check out the AFE Group Buy thread.

i thought that sucker was lost in the mail. dropped her in and gonna test it out.
will report back soon with details to back up the reports.

heh heh, came with a cool sticker to tell the guys at the garage to NOT change the 'lifetime filter' out.
so surprised this is for real. got a good deal for like $35 or so.

 

update: the legends are true!
no difference in sound i could tell, maybe QUIETER....
most noticeably there was less struggle when accelerating. a lot smoother.
noticed that my foot was in a softer position doing 60.
this would seem to mean that there's a gas saving potential?

unless i'm doing this wrong, it doesn't require doing anything to the rest of the intake system, does it? just pop open n' drop in?

 

did you also remove the secondary air filter?? they say there'sa decent gain in doing that on the 4cyl!! just a heads up if you havent done it already!!

 

no i didn't touch the secondary filter. that's in the hose set-up itself, right?
i'm new to this engine- obviously.

 

it should be in the box actually on the 4cyl......here is a link to how to remove it........and you should notice a good difference with it removed according to all who have remove it......
