I'm seriously considering pulling the trigger on a '17 TRD OR 2wd double cab. It has everything I want and looks great as well. 4x4 would be nice insurance, but that is all it would be for me. I won't hardcore off road anything I'm making a payment on. So, the 2wd with the locking rear diff will get me out of anything I'll likely run into.

I just wanted to talk to some people that have one already about their experience with it. The pros, the cons, anything.

Does the locking rear differential make that much difference?

Also, those of you that have purchased one, what did you pay? (If you don't mind) This dealership is down to $32,075 before TT&L.

DO IT! I have a 16 TRDOR 2wd and I love it. I couldn't afford the 4x4 so got the next best thing. I've taken mine off road and have had no issues getting stuck, the locker does make a huge difference though I don't do any hardcore rock crawling. I bought mine in April for that same price 34995 otd so that seems about right to me. If you really want 4x4 just get an SR5 w/4wd it'll probably be around the same price minus all the interior features of the OR model and the DRLs. Goodluck

Thanks for the reply!! I can't afford the 4x4 either in the OR but I honestly think I'll enjoy the tech features more than the actual use of 4x4. Glad to hear that the locker does a good job!

If you do intend on hitting up some light to moderate trails then yes, the locker will make all the difference. Definitely go with the OR package if you intend to

That was my thinking as well plus I live in Socal so no real need for 4wd here. You'll love the truck and if you do want to take it off road she can handle almost anything with the locker, maybe upgrade the tires at some point and a better suspension and you're golden.

Definitely noted! We live in a fairly rural area, so dirt roads are plenty. I will go with OR for sure, I've only been stuck once in my ford ranger and a locker would have gotten me out in that situation.

Thanks a ton for your input. Yeah, I'm in a rural area so dirt roads are plenty but nothing a 2wd couldn't handle, especially with a locker. It is always good to hear some real life experience!

I did a fair amount of wheeling in my 2wd Prerunner back in the day, open diff and I got stuck left and right. When I put an aftermarket locker in it, it made a world of difference. Next best mod I did was sell it for a 4x4 lol, but thats only because I wanted to hit up harder trails still.

Glad to hear that locker makes that big of a difference! There's no doubt it'll see some off road conditions (dirt road; occasional winter event), but I will by no mean off road the truck legitimately as long as I'm throwing a payment at it lol. One day, a brand new 4x4 will be in the drive but that day is not in the foreseeable future haha.

I have a sport and have hit many of the fire road trails up in big bear, many of them rated moderate. Good clearance and suspension will help, and I have ko2s. I'm sure I wouldn't do well in mud or snow but we don't see much of that here. Good choice... Get what you can afford and have fun. Or go for a 2012 with 4x4 and enjoy that. Some good ones for sale here in the marketplace section.

2wd TRD OR owner here, albeit 2nd Gen....

If you really don't "need" 4x4 then the 2wd TRD OR is the next best thing. I've taken many long road trips in this truck (2k+ miles) that have involved fire roads and trails, never had any issues. I've only had to activate the rear locker a few times but it makes a big difference when you need it. Honestly I didn't really know any better when I bought it and I could have ended up with an SR5 or Sport and been happy, but I'm glad now I have that little extra "insurance"

    Good luck

I noticed that, I'm in a manual transmission now. If I ever get back in a auto I'll be pressing an invisible clutch for a while haha

That is my thinking. The locker should, by far, suffice for anything I'll get into. I already planned on using some saved cash to replace that chrome grill

Thank you for the input! I have the same view, if I'm going to really off-road something it won't be my daily driver, I guarantee.

I think this package does offer everything I want and really need. The locker just kind of seals the deal on the package.

Skipping the extra maintenance charges would be nice as well...lol.
