just bought my first tacoma

So I totalled my s10. And I have always wanted a 1st gen tacoma. So I found one here in tampa. 2004 4cyl prerunner double cab. awesome truck. I love the gas mileage vs my 4.3 liter s10. so heres some pics of the old s10 and new tacoma. tell me what you think. And the tacoma has 67k miles on it. Bought it from dealership. Does anyone recommend changing timing belt now? and anything else I should change for this mileage? I do not know anything about these motors. All I know is the reputation is great and I hear the motors last forever. I also hear 67k miles on a tacoma is nothing. I have never bought a used truck with this many miles but I do trust toyota. Thanks for any help guys.

 

Your 3RZ 4-cylinder doesn't have a timing belt. It uses a timing chain. So you can scratch 'updating the timing drive mechanism' off your to-do list.

shows you how much I know. but only reason I asked is because a mechanic at my job told me I need to change the timing belt because of the mileage. are the 4 and 6cyl the same? maybe he thought it was a 6. but anything you recommend replacing besides the oil?

Wow! A 4 cyl TRD Double Cab, you don't see many of those! Congrats!!!

 

You'll have that truck for 5 more years at least. Unless you get tired of it, of course

ya someone actually told me that when I bought it. I didnt think much of it at all. So I guess the 4cyl is rare in this model. F' in sweet!!! thanks

 

The 5VZ V6 uses a timing belt. The factory spec replacement point for it is 90,000 miles, so even if it were a V6 it wouldn't be time to worry about the belt.

If the dealership sold it as a 'Certified' used truck they should have gone through it with a fine-tooth comb.

If you want to be ultra-careful, you might consider checking and maybe replacing the other fluids (transmission, differential). However, none of these are recommended for replacement by 67,000 miles (on the factory maintenance schedule) unless the truck's been subjected to severe service conditions or been used for towing.

oh and another question. does my tacoma have a rear locker?? i mean i know its only a 2wd 4cyl but a rear locker would be nice. its the trd sr5 package. i dont think it does tho. thanks

If it has it the button should be left of the steering column next to the dash lights dimmer. That's where mine is so I figure it would be the same for a 4 cyl if it had that.

 

The TRD package itself includes the e-locker so you most definitely should have it

 

also it looks like your S10 was lifted a little or is that just the picture angle, get a 2-3" on your DC and some 285s = awesomeness

 

is the ect power the same thing?? I do have that next to the left side of the steering column

ect power is different. ect is button that you push and then the truck will shift at higher rpms(vroom vroom)

the locker button is to the right of the dimmer. (if equipped)

 

No. Toyota never offered the e-locker on 4-cylinder automatics (either as part of the TRD Off Road Package or as a standalone option).
