Your slipping Nick! J/K. Yea I painted my siders and they are holding up fine but it was a lot of prep / time. The paint is starting to rub off where my leg rubs getting in / out. When it came to the bumper I paid a pro and am happy I did. The paint looks so much better. You will be happy you did too. He even agreed to touch it up now and then.

 

Any special custom requests that you asked Billy to do for you? A Crom inspired one-off?

 

Nick, In my shed, I have the exact Dakar/29XL, Allpro, Bilstein B110, Superbump setup with exception of the overload spring. Should I just go ahead and add the 3 degree shim when I install all of this?

I asked for options that were all asked for before by other customers. I solicited a lot of feedback from past customers, all who were very helpful and will be given full credit in a future post. That will happen after everything i ordered has been painted, installed, checked for fitment and proper operation and all other outstanding issues fully resolved.

The options I asked for on bumper was light cutouts, shorten sides of bumper by 2.5". On the gate I asked for the tire carrier to be canted forward, HD lockable latch, fold down aluminum table, dual can holders, hi lift mounts.

Yesterday I posted the weight for each item in another thread. I'll import that in here in the future.

It's a gamble. We're playing with geometry. One way to do it right (measure), and many ways to go wrong. Pain in the ass to reconfigure too.

I gambled...hoping to dive under there and measure this weekend.

 

Follow up questions Nick:
Why shorten the bumper? And why cant the tire carrier forward?

 

I'm surprised you went with the tire gate option for the rear bumper. I remember you saying a while back that you didn't want a swing out cause it impedes with the access to the tailgate area. Curious to how you end up liking it. I'm on the fence of whether or not I want one for my truck as well once my build eventually gets to that stage. If my build goes roughly the same rate as yours I got another 4 1/2 years before that happens though

 

I'm in the middle of this right now. I did the OME 885 / 5100 Billy / Deaver AAL lift and have the same vibes you are describing. I had guessed at a 2.5* shim and that might have worked if I kept my worn-out 100K+ mile leafs but I replaced those with stock leafs off a '14 Taco and glad I did. Right now my first shaft angle is -3.5* and pinion is-2.5* measured from reference of 0* at the xfer case flange. I ordered an assortment of shims to get it dialed in and will return the unused or see if any one on TW needs them.

From what I've read, the Dakar leaf pack gives a hefty lift and most guys end up around a 4* shim but that depends on what you end up loading in/on the truck and final lift #'s. I know you have had yours for quite a while but you are adding a bumper. Not sure what that is going to add weight-wise but it might help your angles. I had a lift of 2.75" in the back which was more than what I was expecting. Hoping the 3* or 3.5* does the trick.

i may be old school, but i was not concerned with trying to reduce the weight of this HC, repeat, not concerned, so to that end, the phosphoric acid bath was relatively a quick scrubbing rather than an actual dip. the thick orange rust converting primer is curiously reminiscent of what is constantly being applied to the Golden Gate Bridge.

 

Additional clearance is just a precaution in case I ever move to 35 inch tires.

Cant it's just a preference, it looks better to me.

I ended up ordering the gate because the whole bumper is built around the spindle, and you can't add it after the fact unless you're a fabricator or pay a whole hell of a lot more money. I ordered an extra spindle cage, in the event that I pull the gate off I can protect the spindle. So in a way, I can configure the truck for each individual trip, sometimes I might want the gate on, and sometimes not.

There is a weight penalty for having the gate, it is heavy and also having the spare tire hanging off like that is going to change the Dynamics of the truck. that's the only thing I'm really concerned about. I guess I'll know pretty soon.

Thanks. Your post is right on too. How heavy the truck is loaded will affect ride height, which will also affect the pinion angle in relation to the first Shaft which is why everyone should always measure.

Thanks a lot guys. The shop I used was Able Sandblasting and Power Coating in El Cajon. They are a smaller shop, I think I counted 5 employees when I was there for pickup. They did a good job on the PC and two of them helped me mount the bumper in the parking lot! I was so grateful. It was two day turn around time too.

Yes. All the fasteners are still tight, and battery is still very secure. It's in the photo you quoted, I'm using a product called Cam-Jam for the battery hold down. It was not expensive and features a working load limit of 700 lbs. and break strength of 2,100 lbs Works really well.

Only improvement I could recommend is to use hardened fasteners, like 10.9 metric, or grade 8. I don't know what the stainless is rated for that i used.
