They are right on most, but not the GM twins. I work for a leasing company and lease cars all day. The Colorado doesn't hold it's value nearly as well as the Tacoma, first year, or fifth. No comparison. 4 Runner is the same. I'm short and seriously wanted a power seat, and the only way to get that is in a Colorado or Frontier. I also like how your legs drop down in the Colorado, not sit in front of you in the Tacoma. I like the Tacoma look better, but the final push was the Tacoma resale value. I drive 30K miles a year, and needed a truck I didn't have to stretch the term out five years, to break even in it. I tried to buy a used one, but a 14 equipped just like mine was only going to save me a couple of grand. I see the trade-in values every day, and the Tacoma is worth more.

The Frontier does not hold it's value as well as a Tacoma, but Frontiers usually have big rebates, and dealers will sell them for less profit than a Tacoma, because they sit on their lot longer. If you compare the actual selling price to the resale value, the Frontier performs fairly well. Until very recently, the GM trucks had no real rebates on them to speak of.

Most of these articles are written by people that know little to nothing about the actual topic they are writing about.

74% resale at 3 years, that means that $50,000 TRD PRO I can't afford will be selling for 37,000 in 2020. I still wont be able to afford it.

I've always thought of resale as a small plus. It's all fine and dandy unless someone rear ends you.

Also if you're using your truck as a truck it is going to take some beating, which already skews your resale compared to a mint pavement princess.

I'm going to drive mine till it dies. Could be tomorrow or could be in 20 years.

I got 5 grand less than original MSRP on a 10yr old 2nd gen with 156k on it when it totaled.
    That's less than 20% depreciation.

There is a good article in one of the auto mags where they analyzed the original MSRP of various vehicles, and then the value after 5 years. Tacoma was at the top of the heap with right at 80% residual retained value. GM/Ford/Dodge were all closer to 40%. That's pretty significant.

1 year is not very important. 5 years is more useful.

So here's a story for you. Local dealer has a 5k mile Taco that's just like mine. TRD Off Road with the Manual Transmission, but theirs doesn't have the premium/tech package. They're asking $1,000 more for it than I bought mine for brand new, and I guarantee it doesn't last until the end of this month.

Now I got my Tacoma and a very good discount since I have a good relationship with my dealership, but even so, there are other local used '16 Taco's that have sold at similar price points. 5-10k miles and only maybe $1000-1500 off original purchase price... and people still buy them. It's the craziest thing

a quick search on craigslist will show that tacomas certainly hold their values.. you still see first gens with well over 150k miles going for $4-6k where I live.

Keep in mind this is a dealership selling it so a buyer who traded in took far less so while sale price may show crazy numbers, the original owner saw far less residual value.

If you have an auto do you honestly think it'll last 20 years? Some aren't even making it to 1000 miles. Good luck.
