its because of shit like this I want to see if the dealer will give me some money back on my gold warranty thing. Since I won't be going to the dealer for any sort of oil changes. don't trust their work. I was happy I never went to the dealer when I found out the two nearest VW dealers to me do not use the proper oil for the older diesels. They use the same oil thats meant for the new ones on the older ones.

I'll probably start doing it myself with the taco since its easy to get under and do, don't even need to lift it. With my car its a different story and finding the motul oil I use would cost me more than it cost for my mechanic to do it since he buys in bulk.

Another related dealer horror story... I changed my the oil in the girlfriends RAV4 yesterday. She had them change it at 5k and they even charged her since it "wasn't the scheduled time". The oil canister was on the car at seriously about 100 foot pounds. Trashed it getting it off (yes I had the right tool), had to get a new one. The torque spec is 20 foot pounds. They put it back on with a damn air gun! Never going in again.

The canisters tend to tighten up with heat cycles. When you put them on, just barely snug it

Ah that is good to know. I will withhold judgement on the dealer until I change the oil next to see if I end up in a similar situation. If this is a normal thing though I'm gonna switch her to an aluminum canister.

Had something similar happen on my wife's rav4. She doesn't drive that much so for the 5k/6 month service she only had about 2k on it. They did the tire rotation and all was well. For the 1 year 10k service she only had about 6k on it. They did a tire rotation and said it was ready. Before we left the dealer I looked at the paperwork. I went right back in and asked about it. The service writer said we don't do oil change at 5k. I said I know that, but you do at the 1 year mark regardless of mileage. They had to take to take right back in and do the oil change.
Point is, don't trust the dealer, always follow up yourself.

someone correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't aluminum be even worse?

I'm thinking from electrical stand point any sort of aluminum connectors are the biggest cunt in the world to remove. They always bind even when just hand tightened.

I skimmed through this thread quickly, so if this has already been said, I apologize.

I did everything myself. Joint inspections, bolt torquing, oil, rotation, etc. For me, it's more effort to go to a dealer. The book they give you outlines the entire 5k, 10k, 15k, etc services. If there is something you aren't sure about, then do what you can and take it to a reputable auto repair shop and say something like "hey, could you inspect my suspension and the bolt torques?" It will be much cheaper to have a shop do just a couple things like that.

Dealer mechanics aren't the problem its dealer service department. The guys that tell the mechanics what service to do.

Joe already stated where I'm coming from. I support dealers when internet commandos are speaking out their ass. But in this case, the OP is in the right. Not worth the hassle for a "free" oil change

OP, the dealer's actions were ridiculous, but unfortunately not all that surprising.

What I always do is be very explicit about what I want done. I come with a list of tasks and run them off to the service advisor. Then I ask the service advisor to read that list back to me after they do whatever they need to do in their computer, and finally I cross-reference that list with the paperwork I get at the end. No guesswork, and none of this "X mile service" (to be interpreted at their discretion) bull.

Also - if you don't already have one, start keeping all your vehicle related paperwork (service papers, receipts for parts, etc.) in a single binder so you can reference it later. Also helps quite a bit at resale time, because buyers like seeing a binder full of service receipts.

For what it's worth, your truck won't explode due to a missed oil change. It's far from ideal, and I'm a big believer in more frequent oil changes (oil is cheaper than engines), but I know of plenty Japanese vehicles (owned by acquaintances) that have gone as much as 60,000km between oil changes without any issues. Perhaps not quite as strung-out engines as our V6, but none the less.

So I should be mad at myself because I scheduled a 10k service and they didn't do it? It has nothing to do with my wife.
