getting into the game, the 3200 will be more forgiving. and that 18-55 lens is all you need. sell the prime lens.

the 5100 will be more complicated and is the older more dated model

you also need to invest in good quality memory cards with good transfer speeds and always always always format your cards to the camera that you intend to use them in

say you buy the d3200 for $400

sell that prime lens (the 50mm one) for $150 and you have the deal of the century on a camera that will not be more than you can handle

    So the factory 18-55mm f/3.5 is worse than a 50 mm f/1.8g?

Also wtf does the 3.5 and 1.8 mean??
Okay I gotcha. 5100 is more setup for someone into photography with manual adjustments. Still don't understand why it's considered higher end when it has less MP....

What is the deal with that prime lens? Why would I want it or not want it?
    Does it zoom more? Clearer?

    More sensor matters.

More pixels on a smaller sensor is not as good as a large sensor with less pixels.

Ohh the 5100 does in fact have a slightly bigger sensor.

Either will be great. I'd buy less camera than you think you need, regardless.

An old full frame Canon still takes a better image than my T3i.

Way less megapixels. Way larger sensor.

Another thing you don't know is that there are different captures. Normal Jpeg, Fine Jpeg, RAW (NEF), RAW (NEF) + Fine jpeg.

Raw is straight from the image sensor. Its the absolute best the camera will do considering your settings are where you need them to be.

Had i not told you this, you'd probably be shooting normal or fine Jpegs that are literally half the quality. Almost all of my images uploaded to TW are fine Jpegs. To the untrained eye, you would likely not see the difference. But if you have access to photoshop. You can shoot in raw and then open those files in photoshop to adjust the levels to where you want them. Otherwise, the camera does all of that for you and compresses the image into a normal or fine jpeg right off the bat.

I shoot in Raw+fine jpeg. That way i get a clean image and one that i can tweak if i want to.

    These are all fine jpegs:

These are edited RAW files (keep in mind TW has resized and down graded it slightly)

fine jpegs are more like 2/3rds the quality. thats likely all he needs anyway. but the main point here is, those specs he is reading, are only if he shoots in raw and edits the photos. so pay no mind to them unless you actually want to become a photographer. the camera will do what he needs in Fine Jpeg

there is some sort of software that came with the camera but i have not heard anything good about it so i have never tried it.

being a media student, I have full access to a full Adobe CS6 suite on campus. I highly recommend the adobe softwares if you can take the time to learn them. Photoshop is really all you need and i think you can get it by itself for like $30 a year
