I'm conflicted with my decision of getting the TRD 4x2 but I based it off my needs. No harsh weather in my area and I'm a sparky who commutes alot so the gas mileage is a little better and I will rarely go Off roading and if i did it would be light Off roading nothing serious... but I think I would be 100% satisfied if I had gotten the 4x4

I'm still saving up for my Tacoma, but am doing research while I'm waiting. I've never owned a part time 4x4 vehicle before and am learning much.

Would it be possible to run the 4x4 Hi with open diffs on paved roads to satisfy the maintenance requirements while not stressing or damaging the system?

    I saw on this thread:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/a-trac-trac-auto-lsd-explained-easy-to-understand-i-hope.70551/

That one of the drive modes is "5) 4WD-Hi: 'VSC OFF MODE' (TRAC is off for 'open differentials')."

Would that prevent the binding/stress on the drive train and allow for paved use of the system?

yeah just drive as straight as possible, as long as you're not making tight u-turns or driving in a tight parking lot. You'll be ok with just 4Hi.

I don't know about all that. You can feel the system bind when turning to tight. Idk man unless driving down say pacific Coast hwy which is pretty straight I would not suggest it. I've used it to go up steep hills and stuff on pavement and go in reverse up steep hills on payments but never actually drive around like go to say get groceries or go get gas in 4-wheel drive while it's dry out.
