Have you tested that and found it to be true? I'd be surprised if it behaved that way.

If so, you could keep an extra battery in your glove box.

This is true, it just would not start the engine because it has a chip in it. (If the key with integrated remote battery was dead?)

That's immobilizer. It doesn't require the battery in the key to operate.

Yeah I guess the more I think about it your right. The ignition has it's constant power to scan the RFID chip once its within range.

This is true. But I was thinking if the battery in the key fob was dead the chip in the key would not have the power to allow my truck to start when I put the key in the ignition to start it. lol. But I have information this is not the case.

I have my answer so all is well in southeastern Illinois. Good Day!

I asked about getting a third key fob when I had my 5k service done. The dealer quoted me $90 for the laser-cut key inside it, $160 for the fob, and $55 for programming, for a total of $305.

    I said no thanks.

Uh no go here either. When you turn your keyed ignition the starter "takes over."

Try it, turn the key barely and let it go.

It is basically the same system as the keyless as far as how the starter acts.

I'd say if it doesn't start after cranking for 30 seconds you probably have a bigger problem than the temperature outside.

Yeah, it's understandable to think that. As Murray64 mentioned, no battery is needed for the RFID chip to operate -- it's basically a transponder that gets powered wirelessly by the reader that's trying to scan it. Same sort of system is used for store anti-theft tags and cardkey badges at office buildings.

haha true. As far as I know it does basically the same thing with the key as well. My 2008 Tundra I just bumped the key and it took over.

This is not true of my 2016 TRD Sport 4x4. If I let the key go the truck stops cranking. If I remember the other 6M/T I test drove before "ordering" mine was the same.

I had a smart key on my 2010 4Runner Limited but my buddy who had an 2010 SR5 (with a regular key) had the auto/bump start. Turn the key a bit and let go, car does the rest.

Typical of Toyota to decontent a new model run before mid-cycle refresh.

I suppose the manual could be different from the auto and that would make sense.

Don't think that's the case. Battery only powers the Door locks and alarm. The ignition is controlled by an RF Chip imbedded in the FOB or Key. It doesn't require battery power as it responds to the ignition system by RF.

Well yesterday and today finished driving 775 miles. I'm very pleased running 75-80 mph and got 24 mpg. Cruise was on most of the time except going through Nashville, Knoxville and a few other large city's.
    performed great, post TSB.
