Got a "dumb" key cut at lowes ($2.50) so I can lock up my main keys and hide them in the truck when I'm fishing. Wanted something that was fine if it got wet and won't risk losing my whole key set now when I'm on the water. Tested the new key and it starts the ignition but the computer shuts it down after a second or two. Last time I was fly fishing I took a bad step and almost took out my phone and keys in the waders. The guy there said they only have through 2010 with a transponder to start the truck FYI (Couple pages back conversation)

Chrome cup holder rings, bright led radio screens, push button start, chrome grilles. Welcome to 2016 people. All vehicles have most of this stuff now. Why buy a TRD if you don't like the stuff in it. Why not get the SR or SR5. These are the reasons I bought my TRD.

Changing subjects has anyone noticed that you don't really see any Tacoma commercials. They sure pounded the tv with the off through the sand dunes commercial when they first came out. Maybe they pulled the ads until they figure out how to fix the crappy transmissions. Just think it odd that they are not advertising them. Camry, Corolla and Rav4 seem to be the only ads I see in my area.

    Designed that way.

Imagine rolling down the middle of a seven lane interstate and the battery dies in the fob. What do you want the truck to do when it no longer "sees" the fob?

I don't know,... to recognize that I haven't gotten up from the seat and was driving while it died. It's not that hard to add a small sensor, given that they have one for seat belts, not closing doors, opening the door while driving, fuel tank, etc...
If I got out of my truck and left it running to run inside for something, stopped at a gas station to fuel car etc,.. somebody shouldn't be able to jump in and take
my car while my back was turned against it. It happened to a friend of mine when she stopped her car and went to the pump to swipe her card etc.. her car was just on idle with keys in them.

Back in the days throwing in more and more features and capabilities were at thing for car manufacturers,.. nowadays they even charge you for having a third cup holder. Oh you want that color for your seats, you'd only get that if you add a $3500 premium digital audio feature. Sigh! Toyota was once a reputable company,.. now they don't care the least bit.

That's why the fob has a chip in it and the starter button can read the chip. When you FOB battery dies, you can push it onto the starter button and crank the engine.

    It's in the manual.

Yep, you can get all those fancy features in $60,000 cars. Thats not what you bought.

I have no sympathy for someone who leaves their car running, unlocked, and unattended. If you don't turn it off, you're taking the same risks your friend did who left her keys in her car with it running. It's not like it's difficult to turn the truck off, just press a button.

Kids or dogs in the car on a hot day? Leave it running and use the key in your fob to lock the doors. Just. That. Easy.

So no, I'm not buying your use case.

Our fobs are different from an SR5. The sport/off-road models have keyless access/entry/lock/start etc. we don't have an ignition system to inset any key. There is no key, it's a square box. It looks something like this :

It's not like she left her car running and went shopping at the mall. She was only a few feet away. Look, I will step off here, I have nothing more to say. You're not getting the point, and is getting truculent and combative for no reason.

I was responding to the perceived tone, mixed with some frustration at your treating as acceptable something I consider to be irresponsible. Frequently the morning news here talks of someone who got their car stolen like your friend's case. Sometimes with their child in the back seat. Yet despite that people keep leaving their car running and unlocked as they get out and go into the store, or pump, or whatever. Such an easily preventable loss.

So we'll just have to disagree on the matter. Don't assume that someone who doesn't agree with you doesn't get you point. I fully understand your point, I simply don't agree.

Kudos for "truculent". Haven't heard that one in a while. :D
