OK so I tried searching but clearly my skills are dwindling with age. Every time I go to search I just get a general statement about someones sleeping bag or they are talking about sleeping in a hammock over in the camping thread.
I need to know what reasonably priced sleeping you guys would recommend for late fall early winter northern camping. This past weekend I was wheeling and camping in my trailer and it got down to 39* overnight and I was freezing in my sleeping bag rated to 40*. Dumb ass me I should have just turned on the heat but oh no! Who's got time for that!

I use military sleeping systems. Someone here sells them occasionally.

I have a 13 year old Mountain Hardware synthetic backpacking bag that's rated for 15, I think. It's very compact when stuffed, and has always kept me warm. Occasionally I'll wash it and it's almost like new again. I probably use it 15 nights a year. Frankly, I'm amazed it's lasted this long.

39 isn't that cold for a bag rated for 40. Did you wear a bunch of clothes to bed?

Currently using a down quilt rated to 20 degrees from Enlightened Equipment. Ive had it down to 29 in the San gorgonio wilderness, performed well. I was still too hot TBH.

Its my backpacking quilt/sleep system, weighs about 22oz.

sure do!! its my new favorite bag, tested it out a couple weeks ago and its an amazing shape and sleeps warm. Not the bag for anything but car camping though unless you want to try and pack in a 5 pound bag that doesn't compress. It was able to fold up into my RTT with a thermo rest though so it will stay in the tent when i break down camp.

Well this is a question I was kinda expecting. The answer is no. I was wearing a T-shirt and sweat shirt so my chest was fine but I have a problem with super sensitive skin when wearing something on my legs while sleeping so I tried without pants or socks. My legs and feet were freezing so I put some socks on and my legs were kinda OK but my feet were still cold. I know I'm strange!

I guess my question could have been interpreted either way... I find the better the bag the less you wear. I only wear boxers when sleeping and do multiple snow camping trips a year. My one bag is rated to 30 and the other to 15. Sleep in a tent on the ground with a thermarest and I'm never cold.

Thank You for the link. I think this may be a bit more than I need
That's cool. It seems they have it in different temputure ratings. Is getting a -20 going to be too warm if it's only in the 10's-30's
Crom, I always liked your reviews. If you say it's good then I believe you. Do you have a link to a similar product they may make now?
I was just looking at this but it's only rated for 10* below my current bag
    Link?

i used the -20 and was warm in only boxers on a 40deg night, should have put a dry fit shirt on (NOT COTTON - NEVER COTTON) and just opened the bag. Im sure it will be a very warm bag in just boxers to 0deg which is what i would expect out of it.

I have a 45 degree bag for most summer trips and a 0 degree bag for most winter trips. All are big agnes bags and I really like the sleep system they use. Most sleeping bags need a pad and sufficient shelter to retain the warmth they are rated for

    Welcome.

I found out what it was. It was the UltraLamina 15 degree bag.

I bought it for mountaineering / backpacking. At the time it was the lightest and warmest synthetic bag available, and weighted 2lb 10oz.

I surmise that most car campers would not choose a bag like that. I was just using what I had at the time, and have kept on doing so. :)

I bought two REI branded kids bags, they'll fit them until 18 years old i believe. They ran me $60 each I think. Good value for the money, keep them warm, pack down great for car camping.
